On this first anniversary of his passing, we remember Detective John P. Patrick who died from injuries sustained in the line of duty.

Detective John P. Patrick - Shield #509
End of Watch: 21 October 2024

While on active duty on October 6, 2024, Detective John P. Patrick suffered a medical episode, the result of an injury that he had sustained during departmental training for which he was an instructor, which ultimately led to his untimely passing on October 21, 2024.

Amongst John’s many accomplishments within our Department, of which his true passion was investigative work, he always took on new challenges so as to help out our Department and the community in any way he could. He received additional training and became an instructor in several areas including Ballistic Shield, Defensive Tactics, and BLS, as well as being a Field Training Officer. He was also one of the newest members of our ARRIVE team.

Detective Patrick was a loving family man who left behind his wife, two young children and many caring family members as well as leaving a void in our Springfield Police Department family that will forever remain.

John had been very enthusiastic when it came to donating blood, as it was yet another way of his being able to help untold numbers of people.

In John’s honor, on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, the New Jersey Blood Services, a division of New York Blood Center Enterprises, will be assisting the Springfield Police Department in holding a blood drive at the Chisholm Community Center gymnasium (100 South Springfield Avenue in Springfield) from 1 PM to 7 PM.

It is recommended, but not required, to make an appointment which can be done by using Ctrl+Click on the below link.

Please join us today as we honor John’s life and reflect on the sacrifice he made.

Your thoughts and prayers for John and his family are appreciated in abundance.

As Emergency Nurses Week 2025 comes to an end, we thank those that are still working day & night - and weekends! - to take care of others instead of being with their own friends & family.

🚨😷 It’s that magical time of year again… Fit Testing Season! 🎉

Yes, we all stand with a hood on our heads while LT Jeff Shanes sprays mystery “liquid” (not really) in our faces to make sure our masks actually work. 🤢➡️😂

Why do we do it? Because the only thing scarier is trying to save lives with a leaky mask. Fit testing makes sure our respirators seal properly so we’re protected when we need them most. 🛡️❤️

So if you see us walking around saying, “Nope, I can’t taste anything!” …don’t worry. We’re just making sure we can breathe safely while keeping you safe too.
