10/24-10/26 weekend getaway to Chicago. Traveling used to throw me off- I’d feel unhealthy, out of sorts, and moody.
Now I follow a few principles every time I travel so I can feel good and regulate my emotions. I do this even on vacations!
✨ Plan meals in advance. I’ve gotten really good at hotel room cooking. I check to make sure there’s a fridge or prioritize lodging with a kitchen. You can request a microwave from any hotel. We try to do 2 meals we make and 1 meal out each day.
✨Get lots of steps in. Walking around is a great way to explore a new area! We plan our activities around movement.
✨Find a gym or scope out the hotel gym in advance. If we can go to a nearby gym, great. If not, I make sure to customize my normal training schedule for the equipment at the hotel gym. Usually I can find photos on their website or I’ll call the front desk to ask about equipment.
✨Bring my own supplements and containers. I always bring protein powder, electrolytes, magnesium, creatine, multivitamins, protein bars, and grass fed beef sticks. I bring a shaker bottle, a coffee tumbler, and my own water bottle.
✨Prioritize sleep. I stick to my regular sleep schedule: bed from 10pm to 7am. I make sure the room is about 65 degrees, and I unplug the tv, alarm clock, and anything else omitting light. I cover any other lights with black tape. I take my magnesium at 8pm.
✨I plan a recovery day from travel where I don’t have plans and work on unpacking, doing laundry, and relaxing. I try to have a meal prepared and frozen before I go on a trip so I come home to a homemade meal.
These are habits I’ve built over time. Travel means your rhythms will be thrown off, so it becomes even more important to care for yourself. Take care of yourself the way you’d take care of a child- keep as many habits as you can from home.
The bonus: I can enjoy any indulgences while traveling guilt free because I have such a solid foundation.
