Rock Steady Boxing at The Bodysmith

Rock Steady Boxing at The Bodysmith The Bodysmith has brought Rock Steady Boxing to the Ozarks - a program that improves the quality of life for people battling Parkinson's.

09/15/2025

Parkinson's disease causes a loss of function within the motor systems of our bodies. This can cause movements to be smaller, slower, less accurate, and less coordinated. It can also cause a shuffling gait pattern and often, a resting tremor.

These physical challenges are what boxers condition to improve. Boxing conditions individuals for optimal agility, speed, endurance, accuracy, balance, coordination and overall strength - key elements that are necessary to develop in order to fight back against the progression of Parkinson’s disease. Exercises vary in purpose and form but share one common trait: they are rigorous and intended to extend the perceived capabilities of the participant.

The March Buzz is out and you don't want to miss this one. There's information about changes at the front desk, the upcoming support group speaker, new programs available for PD, and you won't want to miss the pictures of Esme´'s grand adventure to Disneyland and the beach.

Our Story

Rock Steady Boxing came to The Bodysmith in April of 2017. After watching the segment on Rock Steady Boxing CBS Sunday morning and being encouraged by many loved ones, The Bodysmith’s owner, Shauna Smith Yates, decided to bring the affiliate to Springfield, MO. “It has been one of the best things I have ever done for my Bodysmith family,” Shauna says.

The program provides individuals with Parkinson’s Disease with classes that help stave off their symptoms. “We also provide people with Parkinson’s Disease and their loved ones with a community,” Smith Yates commented. There are 10 classes a week, 3 of those which are free, and a monthly support group.

“These are some of our most inspiring clients to work with. They show up, put in the work, and never complain,” Smith Yates notes.
