When a loved one dies we have to consider the expectation of our grief versus the reality. Our mourning may feel different than how we expected it to feel. A funeral service, or celebration of life, can look like many different things. It may be more traditional within the church or funeral home; or it could be a community picnic, a family dinner, or even a special time set-aside for a phone call. Love and support are shown in many different ways, and there is no wrong way to honor the lives of our loved ones. Through this shared time together, we allow our family and friends to help us knit together shared memories of happy times, silly times, angry times, and sad times to create an emotional comfort blanket that can warm and ease us during this time of loss.

Losing someone changes us. The pain sculpts us into someone who understands more deeply, hurts more often, appreciates more quickly, cries more easily, hopes more desperately, and loves more openly.

Yes, ashes can be divided up in urns. This choice often varies by family and religious beliefs. We are happy to comply with whatever decision family members arrive at and of course, we are here to help along the way.

A grief poem by Rudyard Kipling we thought may be helpful today --

For a season there must be pain -
For a little, little space
I shall lose the sight of her face,
Take back the old life again
While She is at rest in the place.
For a season this pain must endure,
For a little, little while
I shall sigh more often than smile
Till Time shall work me a cure,
And the pitiful days beguile.
For that season we must be apart,
For a little length of years,
Till my life's last hour nears,
And, above the beat of my heart,
I hear Her voice in my ears.
But I shall not understand -
Being set on some later love,
Shall not know her for whom I strove,
Till she reach me forth her hand,
Saying, "Who but I have the right?"
And out of a troubled night
Shall draw me safe to the land.
