A recent study from Baylor University explores how social media use can influence mental health in notable ways. Whether we’re actively posting or passively scrolling, both behaviors have been linked to increased feelings of depression and loneliness.

As the study notes, “Passive use, such as endlessly scrolling, is associated with upward social comparison and feelings of envy, while active use can create pressure to present an idealized version of yourself.” These patterns highlight the importance of how and why we engage with social media.

What can we do to find a balance? Here are a few ideas:
✔️ Take regular breaks to connect with the present moment.
✔️ Focus on meaningful, real-life interactions over digital ones.
✔️ Reflect on your motivations for using social media and adjust where needed.

Social media is a powerful tool, but it’s how we use it that shapes its impact on our well-being. Small, intentional changes can make a big difference.

In an age where social media promises to connect us, a new Baylor University study reveals a sobering paradox – the more time we spend interacting online, the lonelier we may feel. Researchers James A. Roberts, Ph.D., The Ben H. Williams Professor of Marketing in Baylor's Hankamer School of Busi...

PostSecret is a community art project in which people anonymously share their deepest secrets on postcards. Some are funny, some heartbreaking, and others deeply personal, but together, they remind us that we’re not alone in our struggles.

In therapy, we often carry thoughts and emotions we’ve never spoken aloud. Finding a safe space to express them—whether in a letter, a postcard, or a conversation—can be the first step toward healing.

At Springfield Counseling Center, we offer resources on our website, including psychoeducational videos on depression, anxiety, trauma, and more, to support your mental health journey.

Antidepressants are often the first recommendation for depression, but research shows that exercise can be just as effective. Studies have found that exercise can lead to even greater improvements in mood and overall well-being when used alongside medication. Yet, despite strong evidence, clinical guidelines continue to favor medication, possibly due to skepticism about lifestyle changes as legitimate treatments.

At Springfield Counseling Center, we understand that healing looks different for everyone. Whether through therapy, behavioral activation, or a combination of approaches, we’re here to support you in finding what works best for you. If you’re struggling, you don’t have to go through it alone.
