Deciding to get in better shape is one of the best commitments you can make for 2015- whether it be a goal of improving your 10k pr, or simply improving your balance and reducing your risk for falls. If you live in an independent or assisted living facility your activities director can be a great resource or you can always give us a call @888-0808 We would love to hear from you!

Interesting that walking CORRECTLY can improve your mood. Is it safe to say that bad technique could have a negative impact on emotional health as well?

Being happy may very well put a little bounce in our step, but new research suggests that if we purposefully walk this way we may be able to actually elevate our mood. Reporting in the Journal of Behavior... Health News Summaries. | Newser

From the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

"Falls are a major threat to the health and independence of older adults, people aged 65 and older."

By the Numbers:
1/3 - % of older adults in the US that will fall each year.

1/10 - % of falls among older adults that will result in serious injury.

1 year - time it can take to recover in a long-term facility.
*Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among older adults.

Johnson Physical Therapy is proud to announce the launch of the Walking Without Worries Program as an antidote to the risk for falls that comes with age. Please call (417)888-0808 for more information or send us a message. Walk on.

Ever feel tight before or during workouts? Myofascial release breaks up fascial adhesions and manipulates certain neuromuscular receptors to let the muscle release any tightness. Self myofascial release is a great way to improve flexibility and mobility of tight muscles and restricted joints. You should do self myofascial release before your workouts or runs. This will help your restricted areas improve in mobility and function allowing you to better perform. You can also do it after your workout, run or anytime you feel you have excessive tension in an area. Call Barbara at Johnson Physical Therapy for more information.

Lumbar spine (low back) stability is largely dependent on the supporting abdominal (stomach) and low back musculature. The abdominal muscles provide the initial stabilizing support through their ability to generate pressure within the abdomen which is exerted posteriorly on the spine, thus providing an anterior support column (from the front of the spine). The low back muscles stabilize the spine from the back and lead to posterior support. The patients should develop a "belt" of muscle around their spine.

While most episodes of low back pain are self limiting and will get better on their own, active exercise plays and important role in helping reduce the patient's pain and improving subsequent function in patients with low back pain. An ongoing exercise program also reduces the likelihood and severity of future occurrences of low back pain. (Spine-Health.com)
