All across America, people who have never before participated in a demonstration are feeling compelled to show their solidarity — with immigrants who are being targeted by Trump, with people who are determined to preserve due process and the rule of law, with Americans who don’t want to live in a dictatorship. This solidarity is to be celebrated. It is the foundation of the common good.

The moral squalor of Trump has brought us back to basics: Why we have a Constitution. The meaning of the rule of law. The importance of checks and balances and separation of powers. The centrality of our judiciary. The significance of due process and habeas corpus. The connection between near-record inequalities of income and wealth, and the record levels of money corrupting our politics.

Perhaps most fundamentally of all, the malignant narcissism of Trump has helped us understand the opposite — the true meaning of patriotism and the common good.

Patriotism based on the common good does not pander to divisiveness. It does not vilify diversity, equity, and inclusion. True patriots don’t fuel racist or religious or ethnic divisions. They aren’t homophobic or transphobic or sexist.

True patriots confirm the good that we have in common. They seek to strengthen and celebrate the “We” in “We the people.”

Trump is the opposite of a patriot. He is a traitor and a coward. His lust for power and wealth at the expense of the common good makes this one of the most shameful chapters of our history.

Yesterday we reasserted “We.” We did it largely peacefully. We gained strength from our solidarity. We celebrated our numbers and our power.

We will be steadfast. We will not cower to a dictator.

We will win.

The President’s wife is a European immigrant. Both parents of the Secretary of State are Caribbean immigrants. Both parents of the FBI Director and the richest person on the World are African immigrants. And 1/3 of the 320 American Nobel Prizes in science have gone to immigrants.

Today, on National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day, we honor the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of America’s prisoners of war. 🇺🇸

These brave men and women endured unimaginable hardships in captivity, yet their resilience, loyalty, and unbreakable spirit never wavered. These heroes remind us what it means to serve with honor — even in the face of the most difficult circumstances.

Observed on April 9, this day marks the anniversary of the start of the Bataan Death March in 1942 — when tens of thousands of American service members were forced to march over 60 brutal miles as prisoners of the Japanese army. Many did not survive, but their strength and resilience became a powerful symbol of American bravery and endurance.

To all former POWs and their families: we see you, we thank you, and we will never forget your sacrifice. You are true American heroes. 🕊️

"Walk In My Shoes....."

Walk in my shoes just for one day,
Feel the pain that never goes away,
The physical is hard to bare,
But add to that the mental strain no one can share,

Walk in my shoes but for a while,
I feel invisible and alone because I have no voice,
It's a fact I can not change I don't have a choice,
No one knows the difficulty to make even the slightest noise,
So please make the effort and thank yourself - lucky you have a voice.

"Walk In My Shoes" this is bits-in-pieces of a poem written by a fellow member of a Cancer Support Program I'm part of. Following a Total Laryngectomy like we both have had, it's comforting to be able to speak to others who are going through this as well. This is in the USA a very rare major surgery. There are not very many preformed each each in the USA. I'm not looking for sympathy. I'm only looking to inform. I had never met or know of anyone who had been thru this in my 75 years of life. I only had a 2% chance of the cancer getting worse, once diagnosed at Stage 0 ..... BUT the odds were not with me. Loosing you voice is huge. Not being able to speak is life changing. I'm having to relearn to swallow, eat and breathe. Understanding what your friends, family and/or acquaintances are going through might be important if you ever come across it. Like I say I'd never known anyone who went thru this...... I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Fortunately modern medicine has made major steps to help extend out lives. Not smoking, or drinking alcohol will go a long ways to avoiding this issue. I did neither and still got it. Other factors could be contributing factors but Doctors really don't know the causes. Like always early detection of cancers is your best hope.

I've lost a lot of friends and family member at a very early time in their life to cancers and it's always rough. I'm going to post this part so I don't lose it and follow it up the the poem shortly. No need to respond just sharing my thoughts and feelings.

History is not there for you to like or dislike. It is there for you to learn from it. And if it offends you, even better. Because then you are less likely to repeat it. It’s not yours for you to erase or destroy.
