As the weather gets colder, we may find ourselves gravitating to warming herbs: stimulating herbs that help increase circulation, improve digestion and respiration, and light our energetic fires. Pictured are four popular warming herbs with different intensities, from mildly warming (turmeric, ginger) to more intense heat such as that of cayenne.
In Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, warming herbs are believed to intensify our internal energy and encourage movement within the body. This effect is sought after to help relieve signs of energetic stagnation such as cold hands and feet, poor digestion, or inflammation.
Compounds such as cinnamaldehyde (found in cinnamon), gingerols (found in ginger), curcumin (found in turmeric), and capsaicin (found in cayenne) work to increase circulation and kick-start the metabolism, helping to move your body out of a more stagnant state.
