Chāndogya Upanishad
Chapter 7 (Khanda 1–26)
In this powerful and philosophical discourse, Sanatkumara becomes the teacher of Narada, who comes seeking higher knowledge. Narada confesses that although he has mastered the Vedas and other scriptures, he still lacks peace. Sanatkumara guides him through a step-by-step ascent in meditation—called the Bhūma Vidyā, or the Teaching of the Infinite.
The dialogue begins with “Nāma” (name) and proceeds through Vak (speech), Manas (mind), Sankalpa (will), Chitta (intellect), Dhyāna (meditation), Vijñāna (knowledge), Bala (strength), Anna (food)—and continues through elements like Water, Fire, Ākāśa (space), Smṛti (memory), Āśā (hope), Prāṇa (life-force)—culminating in Ānanda (bliss) and ultimately Bhūman—the Infinite.
The culmination of the teaching is that only the Infinite (Bhūman) is truly fulfilling, for in it there is freedom from fear, sorrow, and limitation.
