So let's talk about it...

finale was last night and in true Megan fashion, I did the fun mom things. I made the demogorgon shaped pizzas and the demogorgon chocolate covered strawberries. I let the little one stay up late (but not quite midnight).

Ya know what though, it's also okay if I didn't do these things. If I called the pizza delivery guy or bought a frozen pizza. If I did nothing themed and just watched the show with my kids that would be completely okay too. And probably just as fun.

Here's the thing, we need to stop comparing ourselves against each other.

If you are a Pinterest mom and it brings you joy to do the Pinterest mom things then that's great! Love that for you. I love doing the fun creative things and the challenge of creating them brings me joy. But you'll also notice that my strawberries aren't perfect, I didn't do the white outline like the tutorial, and when I got to the point that it was clearly going to be a nightmare, I switched up how I did it entirely. It just wasn't that serious, and honestly my kiddos thought they were great regardless.

If you aren't a Pinterest mom, and doing the crazy themes don't bring you joy, then don't stress yourself out trying to be the same as the Pinterest moms. Your kids would much rather have a happy and present mom than one that is stressed, overstimulated, and snapping at them because they are trying to meet some insane standard that society says is the only way to be a good mom.

Basically friends, do the crazy things if it brings you joy, but don't stress yourself out about being the perfect Pinterest worthy parent. I promise you, it isn't that serious.

Let's talk parenting and perfectionism for a second friends...

You would think that I would have it all figured out and that I am in fact the perfect parent. WRONG! This picture is proof of that, and let me tell you why...

You see this morning my 13 year old came out of her room wearing her favorite wide leg jeans (yeah I know), and a tucked in black polo shirt that she is required to wear for band. I took one look and said absolutely not, you aren't wearing that to school today people will make fun of you, you look like a dork.

Welp, made my daughter cry right off the bat this morning. That was fun.

As I was sitting back reflecting, I realized that in my attempt to protect her from being made fun of, I, in fact made fun of her.

You see, my daughter can take care of herself. She has the strength and the backbone necessary to stand up for herself if she needs to. For crying out loud, the girl taught herself another language in order to cuss out her bullies. But in that moment I sent the signal to my daughter that I did not trust her judgement and that she was not capable of caring for herself.

So what did I do to fix it?

I apologized in a language she requires, quality time. I picked up from school just a little bit early, said the words she needed to hear, and then I took her for her favorite treat, a lotus from Kevlar Coffee.

Does my apology take it away? No. But it at least shows her that I am capable of knowing when I have made a mistake and working on correcting that behavior. You see, we don't have to be perfect parents in order to be present parents, but we do need to be parents who are aware of the impact of our actions and have a willingness to make things right.
