Let’s Talk About Graduate Interns & Relational Work

Looking for couples or family therapy and noticing openings with our graduate interns in our Stepping Stones Program? We want to clear something up. These are not “practice sessions.” This is real therapy, with real structure, and a whole lot of support behind the scenes.

Our graduate interns are trained in family systems, communication patterns, attachment, and emotional regulation. They are learning how to slow conversations down, reduce escalation, and help families understand what’s happening underneath the conflict. This work is thoughtful and intentional.

Every Stepping Stones therapist providing couples or family therapy is closely supervised. That means weekly supervision, group consultation, and ongoing guidance from experienced clinicians. No intern is holding complex relational work alone.

One thing we consistently see? Many couples and families actually feel more heard with interns. Interns bring time, curiosity, preparation, and a strong focus on building safety and connection in the room. Research continues to show that the relationship itself is one of the strongest predictors of progress, not the clinician’s title.

If you’ve been waiting for the “perfect time” or the “perfect opening,” this may be it. Graduate interns allow families to access quality relational care sooner, with the same ethical standards and a strong clinical team behind them.

Reach out to our intake team to learn more about current openings for couples and family therapy with our graduate interns.

Ever notice this?

Your child understands coping skills in individual therapy… But the moment school, peers, or siblings enter the picture, everything falls apart again.

That’s not a failure. That’s how developing brains work.

Kids and teens do not just learn skills. They learn skills with other kids.

That is why group therapy can be such a game changer.

In groups, kids & teens get to
• practice regulation while emotions are actually happening
• learn flexibility, frustration tolerance, and repair in real time
• realize they are not the only one struggling
• build confidence in a space that feels safer than school but more real than one-on-one therapy

For many families, groups work best alongside individual or family therapy.
They reinforce progress instead of replacing it.

Right now, we have multiple group openings and we would love to fill them by the end of the month.

These groups are especially helpful for kids and teens who
• struggle socially
• melt down when things don’t go their way
• feel anxious around peers
• shut down in group settings like school
• need practice using coping skills outside the therapy office

👉 Spots are limited and groups are filling up!
👉 Let’s find the right fit before the month wraps up

Sometimes the missing piece isn’t more therapy. It’s the right kind of practice with the right people.

You’re not “just dropping them off.”

You’re choosing who gets to help shape your child’s emotional world.

One of the most important things caregivers can do is ask good questions when starting child or teen therapy. Not to interrogate. Not to micromanage. But to make sure the therapist’s approach actually fits your child’s brain, nervous system, and stage of development.

We just created a carousel that walks caregivers through the most helpful questions to ask your child or adolescent therapist, including:
• How therapists build safety and trust
• What progress really looks like for kids and teens
• How caregivers are involved without breaking confidentiality
• What to do if therapy feels stuck or slow

Therapy works best when caregivers feel informed, grounded, and confident in the process. These questions help shift therapy from “hoping it helps” to actively supporting growth.

If you’re starting therapy, restarting therapy, or wondering if your current setup is the right fit, this one’s for you.

Foster parents… this one’s for you!

You open your home, your heart, and your calendar.

You manage appointments, schools, behaviors, emotions, court dates, and big feelings that don’t always come with words.

And sometimes you wonder: “Is therapy needed… or is this just another adjustment phase?”

Here’s the honest answer: both can be true.

Many foster and adoptive kids carry stress in their nervous systems long before they have language for it. Therapy isn’t about fixing kids. It’s about giving their brains and bodies the support they deserve while they’re growing, healing, and figuring out how to feel safe again.

Good news: We currently have openings for Show Me Healthy Kids (the foster/adopt insurance).

We work with children and adolescents and offer support for:
• Trauma and attachment healing
• Transitions and placement changes
• Big emotions and behavior shifts
• School stress and anxiety
• Day-to-day adjustment and coping skills

Locations that make life easier
• Olivette – right in the heart of St. Louis County. Easy in, easy out, easy to get around STL.
• St. Charles – Eastern St. Charles County offices
• In-home therapy in Western St. Charles County starting February

We’re child-centered, trauma-informed, and foster-family savvy. You won’t need to explain foster care, attachment, or why “they’re fine one minute and melting down the next.” We already understand.

If you’re a foster or adoptive parent wondering whether therapy could help your child feel more regulated, connected, and confident… this is your sign.

You take care of everyone else.
You run toward things most people run away from.
And then you’re expected to just switch it off and go home.

But for many first responders, the body does not clock out when the shift ends.

If your nervous system stays in code red
If your mind replays calls long after you’re home
If sleep is light, broken, or never feels restorative
If you feel wired, irritable, shut down, or exhausted
If stress is stacking, even though you are still functioning

You are not broken.
Your nervous system is doing exactly what it was trained to do.

Shift Change is a weekly group for first responders who need help transitioning out of work mode and back into their lives.

This is not about fixing you.
This is about helping your body and brain reset after years of high alert.

What this group offers
• A confidential, supportive space away from work culture and expectations
• Nervous-system-informed stress reduction and resilience tools
• Practical skills to help your body come down from operational readiness
• Connection with others who truly get it without having to explain

Details
• Starts February 10th at 6:30 PM
• Meets weekly on Tuesday evenings
• Open to all first responders
• Group is capped at 8 participants to keep it safe and effective
• Cost is $50 per week

You do not have to wait until you are burned out to deserve support.

You do not have to carry this alone.

And you do not have to get permission from work to take care of yourself.

📣Our Spark IOP is open for new members! No wait list! 📣

Some kids need more than just one therapy session a week, they need consistent, structured, and creative support to get back on track emotionally and behaviorally. That’s where SPARK comes in.

SPARK (Intensive Outpatient Program) is designed for elementary-aged kids who are struggling with big emotions, tough behaviors, or overwhelming stress. It’s a short-term, high-support program that helps kids build coping skills, emotional regulation, and confidence — all while involving caregivers every step of the way.

We will have space for 11-13 year olds soon!

Ideal for kids who experience:
* Emotional outbursts or mood swings
* Behavior challenges at home or school
* Anxiety, depression, or trauma-related symptoms

IOP helps kids find their footing again, and helps families breathe a little easier. 💛

Busy Monday! Behind the scenes over here feels a little like a paper parade!

We’re busy creating packets to send out to our amazing community partners. Think doctors, school counselors, educators, police departments and other helpers who care deeply about kids, teens, and families.

These packets are part “nice to meet you,” part “here’s how we can support,” and part “we’re in this together.” They’re filled with info about who we are, how we work, and how we can make referrals and collaboration easier for everyone involved.

It’s a lot of cutting, stuffing, organizing, and double checking… with a side of caffeine and laughter. But it matters. Strong community connections mean better support for families and smoother teamwork for professionals.

If you’re a community partner and one of these lands on your desk soon, just know it was packed with care, intention, and probably a little confetti energy ✨

New year. Same love. Fresh intention. ✨

Relationships don’t fall apart overnight—they drift on autopilot. This year, we’re choosing the scenic route: more check-ins, more rituals, more cheering each other on (confetti optional, encouraged).

Intentional love isn’t loud—it’s consistent.
Not perfect—just present.
And yes, celebrating the small wins absolutely counts. 🥂

Here’s to 2026: less routine, more connection. Save this for the weeks when life gets busy and love deserves a gentle nudge. 💛

Let us be your permission slip to slow it down this month if that feels good to you. Slow is still forward and you don't have to rush to be on track.

From all of us at the Step By Step family, we wish you a new year of health, happiness, and growth.....at whatever pace works for you.

Happy new year to our beautiful community.

Our Story

The office of Step By Step Counseling was founded in 2009 by Jennie Wilson and over the years has slowly expanded. As the need for mental health services in the community continued to grow, the office moved and expanded into the current location in 2013. Our current space allows us to accommodate more therapists and offer more services. Jennie envisioned that the therapists would operate not just as a and multidisiplinary team but as an indiciplinary team. She wanted this model when delivering services to clients because interdisiplinary teams build on each other’s expertise and allow for consultation. There’s an opportunity for more than one clinician to work with a family when needed (one client might be utilizing different services with different clinicians).

Step by Step Counseling’s vision was (and still is) to create a counseling resource that serves the community by offering different specialties and services to a wide range of clientele. As you will notice, therapists or clinicians employed with Step By Step Counseling have their own specialties and populations that they serve. Our mission is to connect a client with a clinician in our community that will be a good fit for what they are struggling with. Many times we are able to provide mulitiple services within one family.

We hope that every client has a positive experience within the practice. How can we serve you?
