St. John Family Medicine Residency

St. John Family Medicine Residency Hospital training is based at Ascension St. John Hospital & Medical Center in Detroit. We offer outpatient experiences at our two nearby offices in St. The St.

Clair Shores. John Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program is a three-year post doctoral training program. Upon satisfactory completion a resident meets the requirements of the American Board of Family Medicine to sit for the certification examination in Family Medicine. Established in l973, we have graduated 258 residents as of June 2021. Given that Family Medicine is a multidisciplinary specialty, significant ties are maintained with the other hospital clinical departments. Indeed, part of the "block" training in the specific disciplines is achieved by assigning the resident to other clinical services during the first year of training. The Family Medical Center and Masonic Medical Center are full service outpatient facilities at which the vast majority of the residents' outpatient education is achieved. The faculty and FM departmental administrative offices are housed at the Family Medical Center which was built in l989 and expanded in 2000. It is located in St. Clair Shores, a Northeastern suburb of Detroit, five miles from the hospital. Located three miles away from the Family Medical Center is the Masonic site. Each year, two residents from the PGY1 class transfer to that facility to continue their 2nd and 3rd years of training. The utilization of the 2nd residency longitudinal site provides additional patient care opportunities and in some regards, a more “real-world” practice experience.

Name: Tilmira Smith

Hometown 🏡: Detroit, MI

Med School 🏫: Wayne State University

Career Goals 🩺: a mix of inpatient and outpatient, sprinkle in an emphasis on lifestyle and integrative medicine.

Why St. John: So many things! The program has a genuinely family-friendly atmosphere. The location is also very important to me—I want to treat a diverse patient population in the area where I grew up. I also have a history at the hospital as a medical student rotator and was fortunate to find my way back.

Favorite part of intern year so far 🥰: orientation obviously! I love bonding with my co-interns.

Belle Isle is such a gem - it houses the country’s oldest continuously running, public conservatory and (debatably) aquarium. Whew
