Clair Shores. John Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program is a three-year post doctoral training program. Upon satisfactory completion a resident meets the requirements of the American Board of Family Medicine to sit for the certification examination in Family Medicine. Established in l973, we have graduated 258 residents as of June 2021. Given that Family Medicine is a multidisciplinary speci

alty, significant ties are maintained with the other hospital clinical departments. Indeed, part of the "block" training in the specific disciplines is achieved by assigning the resident to other clinical services during the first year of training. The Family Medical Center and Masonic Medical Center are full service outpatient facilities at which the vast majority of the residents' outpatient education is achieved. The faculty and FM departmental administrative offices are housed at the Family Medical Center which was built in l989 and expanded in 2000. It is located in St. Clair Shores, a Northeastern suburb of Detroit, five miles from the hospital. Located three miles away from the Family Medical Center is the Masonic site. Each year, two residents from the PGY1 class transfer to that facility to continue their 2nd and 3rd years of training. The utilization of the 2nd residency longitudinal site provides additional patient care opportunities and in some regards, a more “real-world” practice experience.

The count down is over! Dr. Paschall is waking up today with one full day of retirement in the books. He is appreciated and loved by so many current and past faculty, residents, and staff! We sure will miss his calm demeanor, passion for teaching, and love of Michigan (Go Blue!). This next journey for him is well deserved and we sure hope he knows how truly he will be missed.

They have a very busy three years ahead of them but we will be there every step of the way. That’s what family is for, right 😉

Dr. Paschall, Associate Program Director and formally Program Director for MANY years, is retiring at the end of June. Here we have him in his final hours on his last rounding shift, spending it with part of the in-patient teams. We definitely wish he’d stay forever! 30-ish days left, but who’s counting?!
