👁️ DYK Eye Care History: Then & Now

Long before modern contact lenses existed, Leonardo da Vinci was studying eye anatomy and exploring how liquid-filled lenses could change the way light enters the eye.

But it wasn’t until 1887 that wearable vision technology truly advanced. German glassblower F. E. Muller developed the first eye covering that could be seen through and comfortably tolerated. Before this breakthrough, devices placed on the eye were either comfortable but distorted vision — or improved vision but were far too uncomfortable to wear.

That innovation helped pave the way for today’s advanced contact lenses, including modern scleral lenses that use a fluid layer to improve both vision and comfort.
