“October brings a whirlwind of emotions as we observe Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. For many parents like me, it’s a relief to see this important topic gaining attention, allowing us to feel less alone. Yet, we also bear the heavy responsibility of keeping alive the memories of our children who have passed, which can be incredibly challenging.

My precious Hadley was one of those babies taken too soon. After three first-trimester losses and a few years of infertility, I welcomed Hadley at 25 weeks due to what we believe was an incompetent cervix. We did everything we could to keep her safe in utero, but she was ready to enter the world. She fought bravely for 13 days before losing her battle to NEC and a grade 4 brain bleed, complications we can only attribute to her prematurity. Her life, though brief, was beautiful, and her father and I long to hold her again. Losing her felt like a crushing blow, leaving me breathless and heartbroken. There’s no remedy for such pain, and no answers to the question, “Why did this happen to me?”

Each loss profoundly reshapes lives and hearts in ways that often go unnoticed. This month, we come together to support those who have experienced the heartache of pregnancy and infant loss.

To those grieving: you are not alone. Your feelings are valid, and your loss is significant. Let’s create a space filled with compassion and understanding, where we can share our experiences and support one another. I’m here to stand with you.”

One of our young moms chose adoption for her baby and could use some words of encouragement. She is recovering from a rough birth and has no village, friends or family close by. Please drop a message of love and hope below and we will pass them on to her. ❤️

These big sissies asking adorable questions was the highlight of this birth. Midwifery care is family centric and normalizes birth for all onlookers, big and small ♥️

*If baby’s head is born out of the water, it has to stay out to avoid aspirating pool water. Thus the very hand-sy catch you see happening here. Also, me untangling a super long umbilical cord that was wrapped all around neck shoulders and body.

When thinking about birth options after having a cesarean, Homebirth After Cesarean, or HBAC, is a valid choice.

This featured article is a conversation about the benefits and risks of having a homebirth after a cesarean, as well as what you may experience as a homebirth client navigating pregnancy and birth after a cesarean. It is a wonderful resource if you are seeking information about HBAC or VBAC.

In regards to the success rate of HBAC, one of our ICAN Chapter Leaders states in this article, "All of the studies found that those who planned HBAC had a higher chance of actually having a vaginal birth than we see for planned hospital VBAC. The UK study directly compared planned HBAC to planned VBAC in the hospital and found the rates of vaginal birth at nearly 88% HBAC vs 69% VBAC."

She is also quick to remind us "we need to recognize that there is no risk-free way to birth. None. Not vaginal. Not cesarean. Not VBAC. Not repeat cesarean. Not HBAC. There are risks to every. single. option."
