We celebrate Black History Month by highlighting many musicians and artists that have inspired us throughout our lives. We hope you enjoy and are inspired to listen and celebrate with us.

Nina Simone - 1933- 2003

Nina Simone brought warmth, intensity and emotion to every song that she sang during her time in the spotlight. Singles such as I Put A Spell On You and Feeling Good demonstrated her enchanting and soulful voice, which was ever present in the 40-plus years of her career. Though her contributions to music have sometimes been overshadowed by those from other iconic artists, her status as one of the most influential Black musicians in history is assured.

Way to go, Ohio State task force!

Music Therapy License Created in Ohio

The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) and the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) are excited to announce that on Tuesday July 4, 2023, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed into law HB33, which included language that creates a music therapy license under the State’s Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board.

Please help us congratulate the Ohio Music Therapy State Task Force Co-Chairs Team of Erin Spring, Ed Gallagher, Alicia Hrubey, and Madeleine Landry for their leadership in promoting state recognition efforts; task force members Ceara Chiapperelli, Allyson Clifton, Tanya Corso, Jessica Fletcher, Lisa Gallagher, Dee McCarthy, Madison Miller, and Isaac Zika for their dedication and passion; the Great Lakes Region of the AMTA and the Association of Ohio Music Therapists for their support; and all the professional and student music therapists in the state who attended Hill Day events, sent letters of support, and participated in advocacy efforts.

Adrienne, an Assistant Professor of Music Therapy at Berklee College of Music, brings a wealth of experience and has already begun work on initiatives that will help bridge the gap between authors and readers of MTP. So happy for Brenda!

This semester, we are so excited to work with two music therapy interns! Join us in welcoming Brenda 🎉

Brenda Regalado was born in Monterrey Mexico and came to the US when she was 2 years old. She grew up in Austin, TX and then came to Huntsville, TX to study Music Therapy at Sam Houston State University with her primary instrument being Flute. Because of music therapy Brenda has learned how to play guitar and has now been playing for 2.5 years! Brenda is now a senior at SHSU and is excited to go to do her music therapy internship at RGV Music Therapy Wellness Center.

Fun fact, Brenda loves mariachi music and performing it! She created her own group "Mariachi Del Bosque" in Huntsville Tx that serves the greater Houston Area, and after moving to the RGV she joined "Mariachi Nueva Tradicion" de Jennifer Gifford Banda, based in Edinburg TX.

AMTA Statement on Harmful Legislation:
Recently, states across the US have passed harmful and openly hostile legislation to members of the LGBTQIA community, members of BIPOC communities, and individuals seeking reproductive healthcare. In addition, several states have passed laws that are in direct conflict with the fundamental values of the education system, limiting academic freedoms in higher education. Moreover, these laws are eliminating or restricting DEI-related programming, efforts to address inequities of diverse students, and limiting the preparation of students for the realities of a complex world they will need to navigate as professionals. For clarity and emphasis, these legislative acts are in conflict with AMTA’s core values of kindness, social responsibility, dignity, respect, equality, accountability, excellence, integrity, and courage. AMTA shares an overall concern of harm affecting music therapists, students, interns, and those whom music therapists serve due to these laws.
