Meet Nathan, Trevon, and Albert, students in UCP’s Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP)!

SWEP runs for six to eight weeks during the summer. The students in this program are selected by their school's Vocational Rehabilitation counselors to participate and work on their soft skills, independence, and communication. We currently partner with Schnucks, Mercy Hospital, Renaissance St. Louis Airport Hotel, and other reputable companies to provide our students the opportunity to work in the community and practice skills.

This summer, Nathan, Trevon, and Albert are working at the Brilliant Angels Academy, a new site for UCP, with SWEP job coaches Sandra and Nya. Albert worked in the kitchen prepping food and preparing meals. Nathan and Trevon were in charge of keeping the facility clean by wiping down toys and moving furniture.

Exploring emotions through facial expressions! Our Autism clients used a fun and interactive way to learn how feelings show on our faces 😀

Visual tools like emotion cards or a mirror can help children identify and practice different expressions. Role-playing different scenarios and discussing the physical faces associated with emotions can also be beneficial.

Duane, one of our Service Navigators, leads a Self-Advocacy group for clients and staff every month. In June, he discussed the topic of Self-Confidence and how it is important in your day-to-day.

He shared ways to use your already existing traits to have confidence in situations. Duane used himself as an example, saying he uses his humor to feel more confident in certain situations. He discussed remaining positive to yourself and your mind. This internal reinforcement creates more confidence within your mind. Duane also expressed the importance of realistic affirmations, taking new approaches, and not being afraid to ask for help. All of these strategies help you build self-confidence.

Duane used a creative example to make his point, citing Thomas Edison’s journey to invent the lightbulb. “Thomas Edison failed 1,000 times at creating the lightbulb, but he kept trying. In the end, when he accomplished his work, he looked at his failures as successes: he found 1,000 ways not to make a lightbulb.”

Duane always has great wisdom to share and brings a unique perspective on life. Our clients and staff appreciate all of his guiding words.

Medicaid provides critical health coverage and long-term services and supports for millions of people with disabilities — children, youth, adults, and older adults.

According to the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC), as of July 2024, approximately 79.6 million individuals were enrolled in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) nationwide. These services ensure that individuals can live independently, remain in their communities, and access the care and support needed to thrive. Without Medicaid, many individuals with disabilities would face institutionalization, isolation, and/or deteriorating health outcomes.

Check this out! A new and improved accessible park is open in Chesterfield!

After receiving a grant, the Chesterfield Parks & Rec was able to renovate the playground in Central Park. It features a number of all-inclusive play features, giving more children the opportunity to play. The revamped area has brightly colored equipment, sensory-friendly activities, and play elements.

Chesterfield’s Superintendent of Recreation, Kari Johnson, said there was a large focus on integrating accessible features and equipment throughout the playground. “We want to make sure we are as inclusive as possible for all abilities,” Johnson said. “It’s important to get all kids of all abilities playing together in the same space.”

We love to see opportunities like this in our community!
