This morning I shared with two of my clients that I had cried before 10am - because I’m pregnant, and my fridge smells like hotdogs. Critics might say that a therapist sharing this is unprofessional, oversharing, or unnecessary… but that’s not how I operate. Most of us were taught growing up that crying comes with punishment, or that it’s a sign of weakness. I’m here to normalize that being a human and “crashing out” everyone once in a while is ok and doesn’t define you.

The irony of #47 being inaugurated on the same day that MLK is honored did not elude me, nor many of my clients, friends, or family. In both my work and personal life, I’ve witnessed many people grapple with how to face the next four years. There is hurt, anger, fear, and tears. Rightfully so. As for how to survive the next four years, here is my personal answer: Love on your people. Take the time you need to be angry, but do not allow the hate in your heart to fester into despair. The energy you spend hating the system can and will be harnessed for good. Love your people, impact your communities, use your voice. “Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
