Let’s Launch This Baby!
As a bit of recent background that we've shared only a little about outside of family, our baby, Otter, was born with dangerously low glucose levels and was immediately treated to get his levels back in good shape. Unfortunately, on his first day in the NICU, a central line (similar to an IV) through his belly button gave him a staph infection. The following three weeks in the NICU were the most overwhelming days of our lives. They were three weeks of confusion, frustration, and fear. As we spent day after day in the NICU, we acknowledged how lucky we were. So many babies had such greater complications. And to each parent, their child is the top priority. We saw how it’s a tough balancing act for the medical team to manage. Physicians, nurses, and specialists are incredibly committed to their patients and feel the suffering of the babies and their families. While in the NICU, we became friends with many of our nurses, specialists, physicians, and administrators, and talked about how things could be different, and even better, with some little changes or additions. Many of these ideas would also function outside of the NICU, to make babies lives at home better too. After discharge, frustration turned into excitement as we started thinking about how we could make change happen. Our answer is to do it the way we know best, so we are moving forward with creating a new nonprofit, LOGiC.baby. The acronym is made up of our kiddo's names in our blended family: Louise, Otter, George, and Charlotte. Although our experiences in the NICU were unexpected, they were the spark that brought everything together for me and Kristen. We have both spent our professional lives managing and consulting for nonprofits, and fighting for those who can't advocate for themselves. This mission for us, feels right.
