School is starting (or has started) for many of you 🍎✏️📓

What can you do as a teacher, speech-language pathologist, professional or parent? 👇🏼

The most important thing you can do is acknowledge ALL echolalia as communication. It doesn’t matter if it’s in or seemingly out of context. It doesn’t matter if you can or can’t understand it or the meaning behind it. You can acknowledge by smiling, head nodding, repeating it back, saying “yeah” or “okay”. From there, we can do the detective work and figure out what the child may be communicating.

💬 SLPs work across the lifespan, from infancy to geriatrics. Most SLPs work with either pediatrics or adults... I mostly work with pediatrics but do a little work with adults too 👶🏼👦🏿👨🏽👵🏻

💬 SLPs treat speech & language disorders... this can include speech sounds, stuttering, language, alternative communication, post-stroke communication, brain injury, early intervention, literacy, dyslexia, autism, & dementia (to name a few) 👄📖

💬 SLPs also treat swallowing disorders, help with memory, and work with cognition. Swallowing disorders can occur in pediatrics and adults! 🧠🍼🍽️

💬 SLPs work in schools, hospitals, private practices, skilled nursing facilities, rehabilitation centers, home health, early intervention, NICU, acute care, and more! Did you know that SLPs can even serve as expert witnesses and testify to speech and language difficulties? 🕵🏼‍♀️🏥🏠

💬 SLPs are lifelong learners. We keep up with the most current research, trainings, and learning opportunities in order to best serve YOU!🤔🫵🏽

YES, you should talk to your loved one about Autism! 🌟 Talking about Autism should be an ongoing dialogue to help your child grow and learn to understand themselves.

People often talk about Autism like it's all problems. Don't get me wrong... challenges do come with an Autism diagnosis, but there is a lot more to it. Let's look at how to discuss Autism from a strengths-based perspective that highlights differences in brain functioning and Autistic strengths. 💪
