Cupping can be very helpful for nagging aches and pains that aren't relieved with regular adjustments or even exercise.

Unlike the more traditional approach to cupping where the patient lays static with the cups on, we utilize passive and active movement of the patient to better facilitate the proper gliding and sliding of the layers of tissue.

In the photo you can see has some locations that seem thickened after the cup has been removed, which may be related to some increased densification of the underlying fascia, resulting in less mobile fascia and increased pain or sensitivity.

By using cups AND movement together, we're working to restore the gliding/sliding of adjacent tissues, reducing pain/sensitivity, and improve over all movement and function.

Degenerative disc disease and Flexion-distraction, what is it, can it help and why that matters.
-
Degenerative disc disease is a common condition of the spine that presents with normal aging as the intervertebral discs of the spine dry out. It can also present earlier in life following low back injuries such as disc bulges and herniations. It involves a decrease in height of the intervertebral disc which increases pressure on the posterior weight bearing aspect of the vertebra, the facet joints, as well as decreasing the size of the intervertebral foramen (the opening between vertebra that the nerves exit the spine through.

This study included 96 participants (48 experimental group, 48 control group) demonstrated improvements in overall disc height (6.32mm to 6.93mm on average) , decrease in pain (average decrease from 69.17mm to 48.48mm on a 100mm visual analog pain scale) and increased in pain free movement (finger to floor spinal flexion test improved on average from 17.37cm to 12.69c, average increase in passive supine straight leg raise of 46.94° to 56.01°) of the experimental participants compared to the control group.

Does this mean that this treatment is the end all be all of managing degenerative disc disease? NO, but what it does show is that it allows us to help reduce over all pain and return patients to greater pain free ranges of motion which can then be utilized in an effective rehab protocol to reinforce pain free movement, improve strength and coordination of movements and help empower our patients to take control of their pain.

Here we have just some quick examples of how we provide, safe, gentle spinal manipulation, aka chiropractic adjustments, which help manage the aches and pains some patients may experience as their pregnancy progresses.

By using this method of mobilizing the low back and neck we are actually providing some temporary decompression of the vertebra and associated discs of the spinal column. It may not look like much movement, and that's the beauty of it, it doesn't need to be.

Many patients liken the sensation to a light stretch or massage and report significant relief in their symptoms. This decompression is often associated with pain relief, alleviation of possible numbness, tingling or other pains that may present in the legs (commonly referred to as sciatica) or arms, and improvements in pain free range of motion.
