Fun Fact Friday: Let's talk about honeycomb!

🐝Honeycomb is made from beeswax. When the temperature is right, worker bees secrete wax scales from special glands in their body. Then they chew the wax with a bit of honey and pollen to produce the beeswax. The hexagonal cells serve as storage vessels for honey, as well as homes to raise young bees.

🐝The wall of comb is 2/1000 inch thick, but can support 25 times its own weight.

🐝If you can stomach the texture, eating raw honeycomb is one of the best ways to get the most health benefit from honey. Honey in the comb is in its purest form, so it will have the most enzymes, vitamins, and minerals of any type of raw honey.

Here's an educational resource we quoted in this post that goes into more detail about honeycomb cells: https://www.sciencefriday.com/educational-resources/why-do-bees-build-hexagonal-honeycomb-cells/

Did you know?🧐 A honey bee’s body is specially designed to make honey!

Honey bees ingest nectar from flowers and store it in their β€œhoney crop,” or β€œhoney stomach,” an organ containing enzymes that change the pH balance and chemical makeup of the nectar.

When the foraging bees return to the hive, they pass the nectar to younger house bees, who keep passing the nectar from bee to bee. This process continues to break down the nectar into more simple sugars and reduces the water content.

After the nectar is placed in the comb, the bees dehydrate it further by fanning their wings.

Once the water content reaches 20% or less, it’s ready to be sealed with wax caps!

This is a basic overview of the process, not an extensive dive. The fact that honey bees just inherently know all the ins and outs is one of the coolest things about them!

Did you know?🧐 The color and taste of honey are direct results of the types of pollen the bees collect.

Region, season, and the types of flowers available dictate the flavor profile and appearance. And both can vary throughout the year!

Typically, lighter honey has a milder taste and darker honey tastes more robust.

Age can also play a role in honey color and flavor. While honey never goes bad, it does change over time. Fresh honey and 100-year-old honey will look and taste differently.

Honey bees are said to be hard-working, and it’s because from the moment they are born they start their duties.

The first job of a newborn worker bee is to clean her room! She will clean the cell where she was born to make room for new eggs for the queen. Towards the end of her first week, she will feed the larvae and then begin feeding the queen as well as producing wax the week after. In her third week of life the worker bee will forage for pollen, and for the rest of her long life (40 day life) she will focus only on foraging nectar and bringing it back to produce honey!
