The CDC (2021) reported 57% of teen girls felt persistently hopeless or sad and 30% had seriously considered attempting su***de. Between 2017 and 2021 teen girls who experienced sexual violence increased 20%, making the need for education and prevention efforts more pressing than ever. One strategy to improve the safety and well-being of young women in America is high-quality, research-informed wellness education in a group setting. In the summer of 2023, I, Alexis Vatterott, will facilitate a group for adolescent females ages 12-15 informed by my undergraduate background in Clinical Child Psychology and my Master of Social Work background in Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health, Mental Health, & Substance Abuse, as well as Welfare of Children and Families. I designed the group using an integrated holistic health and wellness model tailored to the needs of adolescent girls in America, guided by my recollection of what I needed to hear as an adolescent from an informed and honest adult that wasn't my parent. It is my hope to lead the girls through holistic wellness activities throughout the summer and facilitate the development of powerful empowering relationships while building the girls’ socioemotional coping caboodle. This group will provide a safe, informative space for young women to learn, share their experiences, and feel empowered to define themselves as they are, not as society tells them to be. The program will provide evidence-based psychoeducation and strength-based group intervention activities to support the girls’ in developing emotion regulation strategies, increasing their self-esteem, and empowering them to keep themselves safe in an unsafe world as they emerge into their womanhood. Through implementing experiential, trauma-informed, and culturally competent methods in a fun setting the girls will build camaraderie and define who they are for themselves outside of the confines of societal norms and expectations. Together, the girls will define their space and themselves within and outside the group to best prepare them for navigating issues in high school and beyond. Group will begin the first full week of July and meet weekly for 10 weeks. Group will last 1.5-2 hours. Group cost is $75/week with additional individual coaching available for $125/week. Payment for the first 5 weeks of group is due at the start date with the second 1/2 payable mid-summer. Register on Eventbrite!
