Living in the north? The good weather is here! And that means it is a great time to install a porch lift. Preparation for this type of lift includes a poured concrete pad to secure the lift. Your local dealer will make sure to include an automatic locking, solid and flush gate for the top landing to meet safety requirements when the lift travels more than 30 inches (24 inches in Canada). What is a through-the-floor lift?

When you only need to travel between two levels in your home, a through-the-floor lift (such as the Savaria Telecab) installs without the need for a hoistway. The hydraulic lifting tower is secured to a support wall, and as the lift travels upward, it pushes through a floor cut-out. When it travels back down, the cover from the cut-out moves back into place on the second level. It's a clever system that provides accessibility without taking up a lot of space.

A porch lift is a pretty easy install, but the lift needs to be anchored to a concrete slab for stability. For most installations, you will also need to order the lift with a solid gate + automatic lock on the top landing for safety.
