There appear to be two kinds of doctor, or even, two kinds of business, in the world today. Or at least, two ends of a spectrum. The one end that really just wants to help people. And the other end that really just wants to make as much money as possible, no matter what. This is true in all industries, but it's very true in urgent care. People know. People aren't stupid. People notice. The irony is, and many of you know this all too well, the more you actually genuinely care for people, the more you GIVE VALUE UNCONDITIONALLY, without even thinking about the reward, the more you actually end up receiving.
So even to those companies that refuse to accept Medicaid ("we don't want those poor people stinking up our waiting rooms; it's a terribly payer"), we implore you, even from a profit-mindset, it really is the very best business strategy.
Just because your urgent care system is owned by or affiliated with a hospital, it doesn't mean you should send all the 'good payers' to get hospitalized. There are globally accepted guidelines with regard to when a patient should be hospitalized. Profit isn't one of these guidelines. And yet, strangely, if you follow the guidelines, your profits will dramatically increase.
Just because your urgent care may have a CT scanner in-house, it doesn't mean you should scan a patient just because they have 'good insurance'. There are globally accepted guidelines with regard to when a patient should get a CT-scan. Profit isn't one of these guidelines. And yet, strangely, if you follow the guidelines, your profits will dramatically increase.
We are challenging all the doctors in any such system, if not the ownerships. Follow your gut. Follow your heart. Use your brain. You know what's ethical and what isn't. Would you be doing this if that was your child or your loved one? What if you had a friend on Medicaid, would you be ok working for a company that denied them care? What if you had a relative working third shift who got off work at 8pm and then just needed some stitches for a cut? Would you be ok working for a company that couldn't see them because they were closed after 7pm?
Do the right thing. People know.
