The American College of Nurse-Midwives mourns the devastating death of Dr. Janell Green Smith, CNM, who died from complications of childbirth. Dr. Smith was a respected midwife, scholar, and advocate whose life and work reflected a deep commitment to respectful, evidence-based, and equitable care.

That a Black midwife and maternal health expert died after giving birth in the United States is both heartbreaking and unacceptable. Her death underscores the persistent and well-documented reality that Black women—regardless of education, income, or professional expertise—face disproportionate risks during pregnancy and childbirth due to systemic racism and failures in care.

We grieve Dr. Smith’s loss and recognize it as a profound failure of the systems meant to protect birthing people. In her honor, ACNM commits not only to reaffirming our values, but to intensifying our actions to dismantle racial inequities in maternal health, strengthen accountability in care systems, and work alongside Black midwives, clinicians, and communities to prevent future tragedies.

We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Smith’s family, loved ones, and the midwifery community. We carry her legacy forward with urgency, humility, and resolve.

I was diagnosed with PCOS in October 2024 after experiencing years of heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, hormonal issues. After diagnosis, I became discouraged of my ability to conceive in the future. Today, I believe that with God and lifestyle changes that I can beat the odds, AND SO CAN YOU!🫵🏾
PCOS may challenge your journey, but it does not define your future. Your body is strong and with the right support, hope turns into possibility. You are not alone — and you are more powerful than you know. 💪💛

Morning sickness got you down? 😓 Feeling like nausea has taken over your life? 🤢

Morning sickness is very common, especially in the first 3 months, and it’s thought to affect about 70% of mamas-to-be.

Typically pregnancy sickness gets better around week 16 but about 10% of pregnant people may continue to have symptoms after 20 weeks!

A few things that may help include:

👉🏽Identifying your triggers

👉🏽Eating small frequent meals

👉🏽Staying hydrated wisely

👉🏽Harnessing the power of ginger

👉🏽Using acupressure bands

👉🏽Even alcohol swabs

But if nausea is severe or you’re losing weight, it’s time to seek professional help.

A Stage-by-Stage Guide

Curious about how labor unfolds? Let’s explore the four stages that bring you closer to meeting your baby:

🌸 Stage 1: Early Labor – Mild, irregular contractions begin as your cervix starts to open. Rest, hydrate, and prepare your space.

🌺 Stage 2: Active Labor – Contractions intensify and become regular. Your baby begins the descent—breathe, move, and lean on your support team.

⚡ Stage 3: Transition – The most intense stage. Your cervix fully dilates—stay focused, breathe deeply, and trust your strength. You’re almost there!

🌈 Stage 4: Placenta Delivery – Baby is here! Now your body expels the placenta. Enjoy skin-to-skin and those first magical moments together.

✨ Each stage is a step closer to holding your little one. You’ve got this, mama! 💪
