At Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum, we pride ourselves on carrying out the wishes of you and your loved ones to perfection. While we offer a wide variety of burial options such as green burial and cremation, we recognize that traditional burial is still a time-honored option for some families.

We have offerings available throughout our 314 acres for traditional burials with or without vaults, except for Evergreen Meadow, which is designed exclusively for green burials. Space with pre-installed vaults is available in a lovely botanical setting, Wildwood Valley. Single grave spaces and family lots are available throughout our grounds. Mausoleums are still built today for people seeking a family burial space.

Beautiful in all seasons, Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum is a non-profit open to all who choose to make our Cemetery their final resting place. We have the expertise and compassion needed to ensure your wishes are flawlessly carried out.

Since our founding in 1849, more than 87,000 interments have occurred on our 314 beautifully-maintained acres. With nearly 10,000 trees and woody plant species, the grounds and expansive gardens offer a park-like setting for families and visitors to enjoy while paying tribute to loved ones. We continue to provide burial services as envisioned by our founders, but in tune with today's societal needs and wishes.

If you would like to learn more about burial options and other services offered at Bellefontaine Cemetery, please contact Gracie or Rick at 314-381-0750 or visit https://bellefontainecemetery.org/burial-options-soc/.

Every week, a new piece of history is discoveredโ€”or rediscoveredโ€”at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. This unique tour begins at the Willow Gate House, where we will review and discuss the specific document or record that sparked our latest finding.

Following this brief historical overview, attendees will drive their own vehicles to the discovery site (using our โ€œEPWโ€ method: es**rt, park, and walk). Once gathered, we will begin a 90-minute walking tour.

The remainder of the experience explores the people, symbolism, and architectural highlights encountered along the route, offering additional insights into the Cemeteryโ€™s design. Participants will walk approximately 1.5 miles of moderate terrain across the grounds of the oldest Garden/Rural Cemetery west of the Mississippi.

International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8 annually around the world. It is a focal point in the movement for women's rights. Today, we celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

International Women's Day 2026 theme is "Give To Gain," encouraging a mindset of generosity and collaboration and emphasizing the power of reciprocity and support.

Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum is the final resting place of several strong, inspirational women who have made an impact on history. Here are just a few of the many women memorialized here:

๐ŸŒธ Florence Wyman Richardson, early worker for the St. Louis Symphony Society and first president of the St. Louis Equal Suffrage League.
๐ŸŒธ Gerty Cori, Nobel Prize-winning scientist featured on a US postage stamp.
๐ŸŒธ Dr. Helen Elizabeth Nash, a medical pioneer who became the first African-American physician at St. Louis Childrenโ€™s Hospital and first African-American woman on the faculty of WashU School of Medicine.
๐ŸŒธ Irma Rombauer, author of the first published edition of โ€œThe Joy of Cookingโ€ in the 1930s.
๐ŸŒธ Mary Marshall Metcalfe Rexford, the first woman to land on Utah Beach after the D-Day invasion.
๐ŸŒธ Mary Meachum, an American abolitionist who dedicated her life to educating and freeing enslaved people.
๐ŸŒธ Phoebe Couzins, one of the first female lawyers in the US, the first female U.S. marshal, and a supporter of womenโ€™s right to vote.
๐ŸŒธ Susan Blow, known as the โ€œMother of Kindergarten.โ€
๐ŸŒธ Virginia Louisa Minor, a suffragist and plaintiff in the 1874 Supreme Court case Minor v. Happersett, arguing for a woman's right to vote under the 14th Amendment.

Hellebore, also commonly called Lenton Rose or Christmas Rose, in the Victorian language of flowers means โ€œwe shall overcome scandal and slander.โ€ These showy early spring bloomers are extremely toxic plants to ingest; despite this, theyโ€™re traditionally believed to ward off negative energy and were even used in Ancient Greek medicinal practices. In modern traditions, hellebores are associated with relieving anxiety and bringing a sense of tranquility. One thing is for sure: their blooms are an enduring sign of spring to come. You can enjoy their blooms now while strolling through Wildwood Valley gardens!

You may already know that โ€œgreen burialโ€ is an eco-friendly burial option. The body is buried in a biodegradable container like a wicker casket or a simple shroud. There is no concrete vault. There is also no embalming, which releases toxic chemicals into the ground. But along with being more environmentally friendly, did you know that green burials are also a more family-friendly burial option? In most cases, the deceasedโ€™s loved ones blanket the body with greens and flowers picked for them at the Cemetery, before loweringโ€“and sometimes buryingโ€“the body themselves.

โ€œIt is sort of a nice way to tuck that person in and gently place that first layer on top of them. It helps families with the closure on the physical aspect of death,โ€ says Gracie Griffin, Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretumโ€™s Green Burial expert.

To learn more about Green Burial, you may contact Gracie at 314-381-0750, or visit https://bellefontainecemetery.org/ecoburial-soc/.

At Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum, we believe that honoring a life deserves a process as peaceful as the legacy left behind. While many are familiar with traditional cremation, we also offer flameless cremationโ€”a water-based alternative.

Because this process is still new to many, we wanted to share why so many families are choosing this option:

๐Ÿ’ง It is a quiet, water-based process (often called aquamation) that uses no flames or high-heat combustion.

๐Ÿ’ง It mimics the natural return to the earth that happens with a green burial, but in a timeframe of hours rather than years.

๐Ÿ’ง Because the process is so gentle, it preserves more of the mineral bone cremated remains for memorialization.

Whether you choose a traditional grave, our historic Hotchkiss chapel, or the beauty of our Wildwood Valley Gardens, flameless cremation remains offer the same beautiful placement options throughout our grounds.

๐‹๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ง ๐Œ๐จ๐ซ๐ž
If you are pre-planning or in a time of need, we are here to help you navigate these choices with grace and compassion.

To learn more about this respectful, modern option, please reach out to our Bellefontaine advisors, Gracie or Rick, at 314-381-0750, or click below to view our guide.
