Did you know there is no state law requiring the use of a casket or coffin for burial? Every cemetery has its own specific requirements for burial. Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum does not require traditional coffins or outer burial containers–often called vaults–which surround the casket for green burials. Old-fashioned pine, wicker, or other materials including burial shrouds are perfectly acceptable. Also known as natural burial, this option is free of conventional chemicals. Green burial is often a more affordable funeral option compared to conventional burial, as it forgoes embalming and the outer burial container.

🍄❤️ 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗺! ❤️🌳

Captured today: a truly magical 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁-𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀 has appeared on our grounds, a whimsical sign of nature's artistry! These fascinating circles of fungi are traditionally known as "𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘆 𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀" (or elf rings, pixie rings) from folklore, as people once believed they were created by dancing fairies.

But the science behind them is just as amazing: they form because the main body of the fungus—a vast network of tiny threads called 𝗺𝘆𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘂𝗺—grows outwards underground in a circular pattern, like a slowly expanding dinner plate. As this mycelium consumes nutrients in the soil, it spreads, and the visible mushrooms, which are the "fruiting bodies," typically 𝗽𝗼𝗽 𝘂𝗽 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗲, 𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻, that triggers their emergence. What makes our sighting today so unique is its beautiful heart shape—a rare and special deviation from the usual perfect ring, reminding us of the hidden, wondrous life beneath our feet and all around us, urging us to take in life's beauties!

This enchanting sight is just one example of the many wondrous things you can spot at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum! You'll find stunning views across our forest-like grounds, with enchanting trees and rolling hills. Keep an eye out for diverse birds and wildlife, beautiful blooms, and serene lily pads on the water – there's always something new to discover. A columbarium offers a final resting place to memorialize a loved one, providing a cherished, permanent alternative to keeping cremated remains at home or other less formal dispositions.

The indoor, elegant Hotchkiss Chapel Columbarium at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum includes 600 wooden and glass-front niches. The Chapel is also available for memorial services before or after an inurnment. The Columbarium is climate-controlled and quiet, giving family and friends a peaceful place to visit and reflect.

Founded in 1849, Bellefontaine Cemetery & Arboretum is a historic, not-for-profit cemetery set on 314 acres of scenic landscape in St. Louis, Mo. As a guardian of family and community heritage, Bellefontaine is today more committed than ever before to protecting and celebrating the history of our grounds, our families, and the city we call home. *While we encourage participation on our Page, any comments that contain vulgar language, personal attacks or are off topic are not allowed and will be removed.
