Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum's natural burial option is eco-friendly and provides a meaningful experience for families and loved ones. Natural burial is interment without chemical embalming (we use refrigeration instead), in a biodegradable container, with the goal of returning the body to the earth as expeditiously as possible. Bellefontaine allows natural burial all throughout the Cemetery grounds and can also provide all funeral-related services associated with this eco-friendly option.

Those who choose natural burial often do so for the environmental benefits. Many are then surprised at the intimacy and beauty often associated with the process. Choosing this option offers families the opportunity to participate throughout the burial. From assisting with lowering the body to blanketing the deceased with greens and flowers, there are various opportunities to honor a loved one in meaningful ways.

For more information about natural burial, please contact Bellefontaine advisors, Gracie or Rick, at (314) 381-0750, or visit our website: https://bellefontainecemetery.org/ecoburial-soc/

With recent warmer temperatures, the Ozark witch-hazel (Hamamelis vernalis) has started to tentatively put out its first blooms! This usually unassuming shrub grows natively throughout Missouri along gravel and rocky streambeds. On warm days in mid to late winter, these delicate orange and red (sometimes yellow) blooms unfurl to be pollinated by a variety of flies, gnats, and midges.

Boasting petals like delicate party streamers and a delightful, sweet scent, the Ozark witch-hazel is a welcome surprise in the heart of winter. Be sure to stop by Hazel Hillโ€”a beautiful area located inside Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretumโ€”in the coming weeks to experience these blooms for yourself!

Today we remember David Rowland Francis, a towering figure in American politics and diplomacy. After graduating from Washington University, Francis became a successful St. Louis businessman and a founding member of the St. Louis Mining and Stock Exchange in 1880.

In 1885, Francis was elected Mayor of St. Louis. Three years later, he became the Governor of Missouriโ€”the only person to ever hold both offices. He is famously credited with keeping the University of Missouri in Columbia after the 1892 fire of Academic Hall; in exchange, Sedalia was awarded the Missouri State Fair. Today, MU students still rub the nose of his bronze bust on the Francis Quadrangle for good luck on exams!

His service extended to the national stage as U.S. Secretary of the Interior (1896โ€“1897) under President Grover Cleveland. He was also the primary promoter and President of the 1904 St. Louis Worldโ€™s Fair. By overseeing the opening ceremony of the 1904 Summer Olympics, he became the only American to open an Olympic Games who never served as President or Vice-President. Washington Universityโ€™s Francis Olympic Field, a U.S. National Historic Landmark, still bears his name.

In 1916, Francis gifted 60 acres to the city of St. Louis for the park that now bears his name in the St. Louis Hills neighborhood. That same year, President Woodrow Wilson appointed him as the last U.S. Ambassador to the Russian Empire, where he served during the Russian Revolution.

David Rowland Francis passed away in 1927 and is eternally resting here at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum.

When it comes to pre-planning, the Lawn Crypt is an often overlooked and sometimes misunderstood burial option. However, Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum's Garden Lawn Crypts are worth considering as they offer incredible value in a one-of-a-kind setting.

The Garden Lawn Crypts rest in a grassy expanse in the center tier of Bellefontaine Cemeteryโ€™s Wildwood Valley. Crypts are comprised of stacked, pre-installed double-depth concrete vaults. Each Lawn Crypt purchase includes memorialization for two on the adjacent garden wall.

For those who prefer an outer container, lawn crypts provide an alternative to purchasing separate vaults. Garden Wall memorialization is also appealing as it honors individuals while providing a unique sense of community. This offering is ideal for couples, families, and anyone interested in traditional burial with a contemporary twist.

Wildwood Valley Gardens is the perfect place to honor your loved ones in the serenity of nature. For more information, please contact Bellefontaine Advisors, Gracie or Rick, at 314-381-0750, or visit https://bellefontainecemetery.org/wildwood-valley-soc/.

If you have called Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum since the spring of 2007, it is very likely that the voice you heard was Sheri Kohler. As of January 1, 2026, she has retired, and she is already missed!

Sheri has been a crucial part of our Cemetery staff for these 18 years. She was here as we added many tours, green burials, and achieved Level III Arboretum status.

When she began, the team was small: just two in the Cemetery office, two in Clayton, and two foremen. Wow, things have changed! ๐ŸŒณโœจ

Through all of the growth, Sheri was our steady oneโ€”always caring for our families and staff with grace.

We wish her the very best as she spends more time with her family. We know she will be enjoying her granddaughter, who has a sister on the way! ๐ŸŽ€

Regardless of where you are in your lifeโ€™s journey, an up-to-date pre-planning document is necessary to protect those you love and all youโ€™ve worked hard to earn.
It is essential to designate a guardian for your children and pets and to put in writing what you would like each of your beneficiaries to have. Make note of where your loved ones can locate important passwords, accounts, deeds to property, keys to lock boxes, and more.

Let your loved ones know how you wish to be remembered by choosing a song to be played or a poem to be read at your celebration of life. Informing them of your final wishes allows them to honor you and grieve for you without any added financial and emotional stress over these crucial details. If you wish, you may also build a charitable legacy by indicating how much of your assets should be donated to organizations of your choice.

A misconception about Bellefontaine Cemetery is that the grounds were only for "some" St. Louisans. On the contrary, as a non-sectarian cemetery, Bellefontaine has been open to "all" since its beginning in 1849.

African American history is a vibrant topic on the 314 acres of Bellefontaine. From Mother Baltimore to John Berry Meachum to Ida Woolfolk, African American history has always been present in this Rural Cemetery.

Join us for an upcoming trolley tour! Our guides will lead this two-hour tour, telling stories of intriguing figures in African American History while showing highlights of the Cemetery grounds and monuments.

Please note: Trolley tour tickets are free with a suggested donation of $5 each. Seating is limited and tickets are required. There is a limit of four RSVPs per registering individual. For groups larger than four, we suggest setting up a private tour by calling the Cemetery office at 314-381-0750 to connect with our tour manager.

If walking and running are on your list of resolutions for the new year, consider joining us for our 2026 Fox Trot 5K & Kit Crawl 10K. This event is a nod to our resident foxes who โ€” according to some Native American Traditions โ€” represent the spirit of oneโ€™s ancestors when seen on a burial ground.

Enjoy a 5K or 10K run through Missouri's first โ€” and one of only 50+ worldwide โ€” Level III Arboretum during the emergence of Spring. The rolling hills of Bellefontaine Cemetery's 314 acres will allow a greater appreciation of the 87,000 lives commemorated on the grounds of the oldest Garden Cemetery west of the Mississippi. Virtual options are also available.

Get a head start on making and keeping your resolutions for 2026 and sign up today!

Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretumโ€™s green burial option is eco-friendly and provides a meaningful experience for families. Called "natural burial," green burial is burial without embalming (using refrigeration instead) in a biodegradable container, with the goal of returning to the earth expeditiously. Bellefontaine allows green burial throughout the Cemetery grounds and can provide all funeral-related services associated with this eco-friendly option.

Those who choose green burial often do so for the environmental benefits and are often moved by the intimacy of the process. Going green offers families the opportunity to participate throughout the burialโ€”from assisting with lowering the body to blanketing the deceased with flowers and greens.

For more information, contact Bellefontaine advisors, Gracie or Rick, at 314-381-0750, or visit https://bellefontainecemetery.org/ecoburial-soc/ to download a free brochure.

Friday, March 20, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Join Lacey Reinhardt, Bellefontaineโ€™s Event and Volunteer Coordinator, for a closer look at green burial practices. She will dispel myths and discuss new trends in death-care. Learn about the range of โ€œgreenโ€ funeral options available today, what to expect during a service, and the environmental benefits compared to cremation and traditional burial.

This presentation will be held in Hotchkiss Chapel at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. Enter the main gates of the Cemetery at 4947 W. Florissant Ave. then follow the street signs to the Hotchkiss Chapel.
