What is the corporate practice of medicine?

The corporate practice of medicine (CPM) is a legal doctrine that prohibits companies from inappropriately profiting from the practice of medicine. The law is based on an ethical standard that medical judgment should be held separate from the influence of corporate profit incentives and unlicensed individuals.

Many states have laws surrounding the corporate practice of medicine that ban persons or entities from practicing medicine for the primary purpose of making profit, rather than because there’s any real medical need to do the test.

A common example of this behavior, in states which do not have a CPM law, is the frivolous use of CT scanning by freestanding clinics and urgent cares. Doing such scans is a very lucrative practice and the typical patient doesn’t suspect any wrongdoing on the part of the clinic.

These laws are intended to avoid corporate influence on physicians and the commercialization of medicine, imposed on an unsuspecting public.

We don’t support such commercial practices. We believe that patients must always come before profit. Without exception. Don’t use day clinics which have moneymaking machines humming away in-house.
