The Foundation is excited and grateful to celebrate this news with our community! Bloomberg Philanthropies’ transformative $10 million investment in the BJC HealthCare and Believe STL Academy program partnership is creating a new era for health care education in our region. Over the past several years, our Foundation team has been honored to join colleagues across BJC and partners at BELIEVE and The Opportunity Trust to help launch this first-of-its-kind initiative in St. Louis. Last week's celebration was the start of so much — for BELIEVE’s students, their families, and our region’s vital health care industry.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is almost over, but the impact donors make extends far beyond October. đź©·

Thanks to donors through the Foundation, researchers at WashU Medicine and Siteman Cancer Center are making breakthroughs in triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive cancer subtypes.

Dr. Shu (Joy) Jiang and collogues have developed an AI technology that predicts patient risk for developing triple-negative breast cancer in the next five years. This summer the technology received Breakthrough Device designation from the FDA and was acquired by Lunit Cancer Screening.

Every discovery begins with generosity. Help shape what comes next. https://ow.ly/UzH150Xiwpm

In 2020, Pam Nicholson was diagnosed with breast cancer. Though far from her hometown of St. Louis, she turned to Julie Margenthaler, MD, FACS, the director of Breast Surgical Services at Siteman Cancer Center.

Thanks to Dr. Margenthaler’s expertise and compassionate care, Pam is healthy today and giving back to ensure others have the same opportunity at life. She established the Julie Margenthaler MD Breast Cancer Fund to support patient care, education, and training.

At just 39, Penny Pennington was diagnosed with breast cancer, alongside her mother who had been diagnosed only months prior. Penny came out a thriver with a new mantra she carries today: “Kick Cancer to the Curb.”

Now, she and her husband, Mike, are giving back through the Foundation. In 2023, they established the Breast Cancer Community Investment Fund to support prevention, education, screening, and research at Siteman Cancer Center, ensuring more patients have access to earlier diagnoses and the hope of thriving.

Penny’s journey is powerful, and her impact even greater. 🌟 Read her full story here ➡️ https://www.foundationbarnesjewish.org/your-impact/penny-pennington

Our Story

As part of the 1996 merger of Barnes Hospital and Jewish Hospital, The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital was born, carrying forward a rich history of philanthropy from both institutions.

Over time, much has changed at the Foundation. In 2011, its original name—the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation—became The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The board of directors also has evolved. Once required to have 20 board members each from the former Barnes and Jewish Hospitals, it now represents a cross-section of the broader community.

Many other aspects of hospital life, such as medical technology and health care options, have also changed dramatically. But one focus remains the same. Barnes and Jewish Hospital were founded, through generous donations, to provide medical care to patients of any religion or economic background—and today, Barnes-Jewish Hospital continues to offer the same broad-based care, thanks to the continued generosity of the community.
