What is peripheral neuropathy? 🤔

The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system. The nerves that branch off from the spinal cord and extend throughout the rest of your body including your hands and feet are what we refer to as the peripheral nervous system. These peripheral nerves communicate back and forth with the brain and spinal cord to send very important nerve signals.

Peripheral neuropathy occurs when the nerves that branch off from the spinal cord become damaged. When these peripheral nerves are damaged, the nerve signals are significantly disrupted causing a wide variety of symptoms which can be present most often in the hands and/or feet.

Neuropathy can be caused by several conditions and diseases including:

- Diabetes (most common cause)
- Autoimmune disease
- Alcohol use disorder
- Exposure to certain toxins (ex. industrial chemicals, heavy metals)
- Chemotherapy
- Low vitamin levels (especially B vitamins)
- Trauma or pressure directly on the nerves involved

Complications of neuropathy can include burns/wounds and infection due to lack of sensation to temperature or pain. Those with neuropathy are also at a higher risk of falling due to weakness and balance issues commonly seen with those who have nerve damage in their feet.

But guess what! Neuropathy is one of the most common pain conditions treated at Saint Louis Pain Center and we have seen great results! Call today at 314-846-2100 to schedule your free consultation with our provider to discuss how our treatments can help you! 📞
