It’s a common myth that children’s mental health is out of our hands—that stress, anxiety, or emotional struggles are inevitable and unchangeable. But the truth is, one of the most powerful forms of protection is something we can all offer: quality time.
While genetics play a role in the development of mental health issues, they don't solely determine mental health outcomes. That’s where environment comes into play! When adults spend meaningful time with children—listening, playing, talking, and simply being present—it strengthens their sense of security, reduces stress, and bolsters their emotional well-being. Research suggests that creating these supportive environments for children can help moderate a child’s genetic risk of developing mental illness.
