Life circumstances got me a little down a while back and I got into a bad habit, mostly with sugar, including a nightly glass of wine. I have a big day coming up later in the month and I want to be at my best so I've stopped what I call "stupid eating"... the stuff that provides no nutritional value. It's only been a few days and I already feel better.
(P.S. of course, I continue working out as well... gotta keep movin')

We all know the importance of eating right, but now there's scientific proof that diet can be just as good as medication when it comes to treating moderate to severe depression.

The most essential ingredient is in the dressing.

Great overview on sugar ...more articulate than I on why I recommend against substitute sweeteners. I recently did a sugar detox and while I'm no longer as strict, I am eating less because it's just not all that appealing once you break the hold sugar has on your body. Know what you are eating and make mindful decisions. If you want something sweet, go for a natural one first (i.e. fruit) but it's also fine to go for a cookie or piece of dark chocolate now and then. With a balanced diet and regular exercise, you'll be just fine.

The average American consumes almost 20 teaspoons of sugar per day. Do you need a sugar detox?

There is a lot of data here calling for real social/cultural change in this country about food. But for you and me, here today...

More than 70% of people don't eat enough fruit and vegetables.
More than 80% of us don't meet guidelines for activity (150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week).

If this is you... can you make a better choice today?

Obesity rates in the United States have tripled since the 1960s and doubled since the 1980s. Nearly 70 percent of Americans are overweight or obese, a national epidemic that contributes to chronic disease, disability, and death, and places a large financial strain on the health care system.

Those who know me know I get agitated at the mention of "diets" and pounds lost because we know, and we keep learning more about how those are short term successes at best. Instead, build a healthy lifestyle around these three simple guidelines. It's easy to remember, flexible and avoids the drama of feeling deprived. The results come slower but they will stick!

The evidence shows that there isn’t one better way to lose weight, but diets that work all have these things in common.

I I'm still off of desserts/sugar but I will try these eventually... probably with quinoa flour instead of coconut.. .

I tried this last night and it was very good - another example of making small changes - substituting whole wheat flour for white - with little pain. Next time I will substitute honey for sugar.

Let's not fool ourselves that we can take our eye off the ball when it comes to the health of children. They are establishing habits that might haunt them for their entire lives.

Having said that, I'm not a fan of labeling them with a BMI. Instead, we could be looking at how active and socially engaged they are, along with school performance - all of which are related to proper nutrition - and how they view themselves. Adults in the life of an unhealthy child must face the reality that they are likely modeling unhealthy behaviors around food. So it's not about a diet for the child, it's about small lifestyle changes for the family.
