On Veteran’s Day we take a moment to honor the lives of those who have served in the armed forces.

Veterans often struggle with mental health issues and many have a hard time finding help. PTSD, depression, and su***de are sadly very common among veterans.

And of course there are the physical problems veterans suffer, too. Being in the military is hard work!

If there’s a vet in your life, take a minute today to shoot them a text and see how they’re doing.

And if you’re a veteran (or know one) and need a doctor, we are glad to help!

We are at the Webster Holiday Walk today with a booth set up at Rolling Ridge.

The holidays can be pretty tough on people, and managing your energy and stress levels are very important this time of year. Maybe get some early shopping out of the way before your life gets too busy will help. There’s plenty of local handmade stuff to browse here!

And then when the holidays are over and you have time to focus on you, come on over and let me be your doctor!

😲 Yikes! Hundreds of thousands of bottles of atorvastatin (brand name Lipitor) have been recalled due to a failure of the pill to dissolve properly. Millions of people take this medicine. Chances are good that it's in either in your medicine cabinet or someone's you know.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/fda-recalls-more-140k-bottles-200542931.html

If you're on atorvastatin, you should check the FDA recall notice and see if the lot number of any bottles you have is affected.
https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/ires/?Event=97639

If your medicine is on the list, don't panic! It won't hurt you. The recall is because the pills might not be as effective. But you should for sure get rid of that bottle and get a new one.

My suspicion is that atorvastatin will be hard to get in the coming months because this recall has taken millions of pills off the shelves. You might need to switch to a different cholesterol medicine. This isn't a big deal, there are many!

If you need help with this, give us a call. Happy to help those of you who need new prescriptions called in, even if you aren't our patients. And if you'd like, I'd be thrilled to be your doctor! You can sign up for an intro chat at:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recalled more than 140,000 bottles of a common statin medication. Is your medication one of them?

Many of you have experienced the frustration of going unheard when you talk with doctors. Jessica experienced this for most of her life, telling doctor after doctor about her symptoms and being continually brushed off. But she persisted and eventually made contact with a Harvard researcher who diagnosed her with a rare genetic condition. Even with the diagnosis in hand, she’s struggled to find doctors who will take her condition seriously. She’s an inspiration to me because she relentlessly worked the medical system until she got what she needed. I can take no credit for Jessica’s pluck and intelligence, nor for diagnosing her condition. But I’m super proud to be part of her healthcare team now, helping coach her through specialist visits and treatment options. This is what primary care should look like!

Look at these winners!

On Saturday, the Nexus crew (plus some friends!) spent the evening supporting Doorways at the BYOBoo Trivia Night. Doorways is an organization dedicated to providing housing and healthcare to people with HIV.

Our team name? The Devils in the Details. We walked away as the winners of the trivia competition! Did we have to make any deals with anyone down at the old crossroads under the light of a pale moon to get any special knowledge? One will never know… but the prize might have been a fiddle of gold. 😈

Feeling exhausted? Sleep apnea, perimenopause, chronic fatigue syndrome, thyroid disorders, anemia, IBS, depression are all common reasons for ongoing fatigue. And that isn't even all of the possibilities. It takes a lot of time and patient history to determine next steps. Since we have hour-long appointments and no limit to the number of appointments, we have that time with our patients to really dig into your history, do a thorough workup, and focus on improving your quality life.

Not feeling well-rested or being unable to sleep not only saps your energy, it can make aches and pains worse, contribute to depression and anxiety, and even cause other chronic illnesses to flare up. There are a lot of possibilities for things that can cause chronic fatigue. I have lots of time to

Last weekend we were at the DPC Summit, a conference specifically for practices like ours, put on by the AAFP, the largest body of primary care providers in the country.

Some of the DPC providers we met have been operating for a decade or more, some of them are newer practices, and others are actively invested in starting or switching over to a Direct Primary Care model.

But the common thread we found among everyone we met is we all have a passion for providing excellent care for patients, and we believe that we can provide that care best what not dictated by the rules and restrictions that insurance imposes on primary care. It was an incredible weekend of learning and connections.

There’s a box of tissues on my desk right next to my fancy tree-plant. People often ask why I’ve got Kleenex on my desk. I tell them, “People cry a lot in here.” When they ask why, I sort of hand wave and say, “Well, doctors don’t always listen very well, and sometimes when you find one that will listen to you, it can be emotional.”

A patient I recently saw for the first time snickered a little when I told her that. Like me, she’s a Gen X person who’s really good at masking her feelings.

After visit number three, when she’s crying a bit because we’ve managed to figure out some of her problems, she quietly mutters, “I get the crying thing now.”

Gotta hand it to her, ar least she didn’t need a Kleenex. Gen X is tough that way. 😤

If you haven’t had a doctor make you cry in a while, consider giving us a call. 😘

The closure of the Long COVID clinic at WashU will leave many patients struggling to find care. My heart goes out to those who are distressed about this abrupt change.

If you’re looking for a P*P that has time to hear your symptoms and work with you to continue access to therapies that have made a difference for you, please reach out. I’m not a Long COVID specialist, but I have patients with this syndrome and I can provide support.

Patients fear the clinic’s closure will end their access to the latest research, clinical trials for new treatments, and specialists with expertise in treating Long COVID symptoms.
