There’s a box of tissues on my desk right next to my fancy tree-plant. People often ask why I’ve got Kleenex on my desk. I tell them, “People cry a lot in here.” When they ask why, I sort of hand wave and say, “Well, doctors don’t always listen very well, and sometimes when you find one that will listen to you, it can be emotional.”

A patient I recently saw for the first time snickered a little when I told her that. Like me, she’s a Gen X person who’s really good at masking her feelings.

After visit number three, when she’s crying a bit because we’ve managed to figure out some of her problems, she quietly mutters, “I get the crying thing now.”

Gotta hand it to her, ar least she didn’t need a Kleenex. Gen X is tough that way. 😤

If you haven’t had a doctor make you cry in a while, consider giving us a call. 😘

The closure of the Long COVID clinic at WashU will leave many patients struggling to find care. My heart goes out to those who are distressed about this abrupt change.

If you’re looking for a P*P that has time to hear your symptoms and work with you to continue access to therapies that have made a difference for you, please reach out. I’m not a Long COVID specialist, but I have patients with this syndrome and I can provide support.

Patients fear the clinic’s closure will end their access to the latest research, clinical trials for new treatments, and specialists with expertise in treating Long COVID symptoms.

There are many questions swirling right now regarding vaccinations and availability of COVID and flu shots in the fall. The actions of the current administration with regard to the CDC and FDA have us all concerned about how the winter respiratory season might shape up. Here are insights on the potential impacts and recommendations.

Reason #1,941 I love my job. Saw a very dear patient this morning who had some issues with her heart medicines. I used my fancy cool stethoscope to capture a quick heart rhythm tracing, and saw some abnormalities. Sent it (securely!) to the cardiologist (the amazing Stephanie White at St. Mary's). Got a quick back and forth text consult. Made a medication adjustment, and am having my patient return tomorrow for a recheck and more adjustments if needed. Patient has my cell phone number in case anything comes up today.

We avoided days of back and forth trying to get cardiology appointments, testing, follow up visits, med changes, and so on. Very likely avoided at least an urgent care visit and maybe even a visit to the ER. We'll have this patient right back where they need to be by Thursday.

This is how medicine should be. Everyone deserves this.

A few years ago, I discovered the concept of meditation, and it’s changed my life. I think it’s essential for almost everyone to learn this skill, and I try to work it into almost every treatment plan I help a patient create. The reason meditation is so important is that it helps us understand what’s going on in our brains. If you don’t know what’s happening in your brain, you’ll have a hard time managing all kinds of problems.

Today we're featuring a guest post from cardiologist Dr. Stephanie White. The message around cardiovascular symptoms in women typically boils down to: “Well, the symptoms are different in women and so it is hard to get them appropriately diagnosed or treated because ERs work off of the symptoms that men exhibit. Good luck…” What we don't hear is people talking about all the diagnostic tests we can use to help identify cardiovascular issues and risk factors before they have a chance to turn into a heart attack/coronary event.

Even in times of financial or political uncertainty, it’s important to have a plan to maintain your health. In fact, this is when watching your health is most important.

Even in times of financial or political uncertainty, it’s important to have a plan to maintain your health. In fact, I would argue that these are the times when watching your health is most important. One advantage to having a practice like ours is that if you change jobs, your healthcare is not a...
