One of our favorite future pro baseball players is thriving despite a daunting diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in the NICU at 3 months old. ⚾❤️
Jesse's condition means that his heart muscles are thicker than most, which can restrict blood flow to the rest of the body. Although his mom was determined to let him live a full life, she was, understandably, cautious about how his condition might impact his everyday life.
Fortunately, Jesse and his family made their way to St. Louis Children's where Dr. Anthony P***a, a WashU Medicine electrophysiologist, determined that Jesse would benefit from an extravascular cardioverter-defibrillator, or EVICD. An EVICD can detect abnormal rhythms and reset them automatically. This February, Jesse became the first pediatric patient in Missouri to receive this kind of device, which he now wears proudly.
