I really like what Brené Brown calls Speaking Truth to Bu****it. Here are the main points:

Speaking Truth to Bu****it: Brown encourages individuals to address "bu****it" when they encounter it, whether it's from others or even within themselves. She distinguishes "bu****it" from outright lies, describing it as a "wholesale dismissal of the truth" rather than a mere defiance of it.

The Courage to Be Vulnerable: Speaking truth to bu****it requires courage and vulnerability, as it can feel risky and expose us to potential judgment or rejection. Brown emphasizes that courage is born out of vulnerability, not strength.

Civility and Generosity: Brown advocates for a nuanced approach that involves being civil and generous when speaking truth to bu****it. This means choosing to make the most generous assumption about the other person and approaching the conversation with kindness and respect, even when disagreeing.

Boundaries: Setting boundaries is essential for maintaining integrity and enabling both civility and generosity. Brown suggests that the most compassionate people are often the most boundaried, as clear boundaries prevent resentment and burnout, allowing for continued compassion and empathy.

Authenticity and Integrity: Choosing authenticity, as Brown defines it, involves aligning our actions with our values and having the courage to show up as our true selves, even when it's uncomfortable. Speaking truth to bu****it is a part of living authentically and with integrity.

In Navajo culture, laughter is seen as a powerful symbol of connection. The moment a baby laughs for the first time, it is believed they are choosing to join the human community. Until then, the baby is viewed as still being in transition between the spiritual and physical worlds.

This tradition, known as the A’wee Chi’deedloh ceremony, is typically observed around three months of age. Family members pay close attention during this period, eager to be the one who makes the child laugh. Whoever succeeds earns the honor of hosting the celebration, often preparing a meal of salted food and gifts to mark the occasion.

The ceremony not only celebrates the baby’s first expression of joy, but also emphasizes generosity and community. Salt is symbolically offered to guests to encourage the child to grow up to be generous and kind. It’s one of the earliest social teachings given to a Navajo child—using joy as a path toward belonging and humanity. 🎉👶
