The essential type of rest you’re probably not getting enough of ⬇️
-
We tend to think rest = sleep, watching TV, or reading. Those are forms of rest—and they’re important—but there’s something essential missing.
-
Your mind and body need three different types of restoration:
-
• Sleep → physical repair, energy, memory
• Recreation → stepping out of routine, enjoyment (reading, gardening, crafting, watching something)
• Relaxation → an alert but calm state where you’re not task-oriented
-
✨ And relaxation is the form of rest that is less and less common these days.
-
Because we’ve gotten so used to constant stimulation—scrolling, working, watching, multitasking—that we rarely give ourselves space to simply “be”.
-
True relaxation looks like:
-
• Letting your mind wander
• Sitting in stillness
• No screens, no tasks, no planning
• Just quiet presence
-
✨ In this mind-wandering state, your brain enters what we call “Resting Connectivity State,” in which some of its most essential functions take place.
-
A resilient, well-regulated life needs this form of rest in balance with sleep and recreation.
-
Save this as a reminder to build in real rest, not just more activity in disguise.
