Flexibility and mobility are similar but different and in physical therapy we use both to restore function. This ensures stability with your mobility and increasing flexibility to a necessary length to avoid injury and dysfunction. The easiest way to tell the difference between the two is how your muscles react in each movement. Flexibility often involves moving a joint without forcing it or engaging your muscles to move it in a certain way. Mobility is when your muscles engage in deep movement like a squat or cat/cow exercise. Movement is a part of both, but your muscles engaging and putting yourself in certain positions are the difference between the two. Both flexibility and mobility are key for a high-quality life. Being able to be both flexible and mobile reduces stiffness, prevents injuries, and often increases blood flow and movement.

Sometimes during daily activities your spine can start to feel irritation or even pain from built up pressure or even certain movements causing pain. Luckily there are some things that can relieve or even fix the pain. These include stretches like the cat-cow, child’s pose, and knee to chest. These stretches help release excess pressure that might build up from continuously sitting or straining your back doing daily activities. Learn more about Specialized Physical Therapy and how these stretches can help here --> https://specializedpt-stl.com/common-stretches-that-increase-mobility-and-relieve-tension-in-your-spine/

If you’re dealing with pain, stiffness, or a recent injury, it’s common to wonder whether you should start with physical therapy or see an orthopedic doctor. In many cases, beginning with physical therapy is the most effective first step especially for back pain, neck pain, joint discomfort, or sports related injuries. At Specialized Physical Therapy, our focus is on reducing pain, restoring movement, and improving strength through personalized, non-surgical care. Many patients experience significant relief with targeted therapy alone, helping them avoid unnecessary procedures or imaging.
However, there are times when an orthopedic evaluation may be necessary, such as after a traumatic injury, with severe or worsening pain, or if symptoms like numbness, tingling, or weakness are present. Learn more here --> https://specializedpt-stl.com/spt-blog-posts/

Shoulder impingement is a painful condition where the tendons in the shoulder are compressed, pinched or being rubbed by surrounding bones during movement. It’s usually caused by repetitive overhead motions like swimming, pitching, or climbing, and can cause inflammation, irritation, and structural issues like bone spurs. Luckily, this symptom can be treated with non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy, rest, activity modification, icing, and taking over the counter medication to help with pain and inflammation. If the issue persists for over 6 weeks, then that might be a sign of further help needed, like surgery or shoulder injections. Physical therapy is a critical component in most Personal Injury (PI) and Workers Compensation (Work Comp) cases. Physical therapy can help restore function, reduce pain and rehabilitate the patient/ client. This helps the patient get back to doing the things they love. Physical therapy can also serve as a confirmation of pain or symptoms for the patient, which can help strengthen a Work comp or PI case. Also, showing that you need consistent PT can result in higher policy limits due to increased medical costs. Physical therapy can be beneficial in many ways, it helps the body while ensuring you get what you need from your case! Call today to schedule your consultation and we will help you get back to doing the things you love, pain free!

Manual Therapy is very important when it comes to physical therapy and your recovery process. Manual therapy is a hands-on physical therapy approach that involves specific movements to manipulate, mobilize, and massage joints and soft tissue to reduce pain, increase motion, and speed up recovery. This technique differs from others who use exercise only approach or machine based only physical therapy. While those can also help, manual therapy has been found to be more effective for targeted injuries, pain relief, and restoring tissues. This allows for more effective results. Here at Specialized Physical Therapy, we cover manual, exercise, and machine based physical therapy to give our patients the opportunity to recover in various ways. Call and schedule your appointment today!
