Fontbonne University - Communication Disorders & Deaf Education

Fontbonne University - Communication Disorders & Deaf Education We are a program that prepares future leaders in Deaf Education and Speech-Language Pathology.

The ability to communicate is our most precious human characteristic. When a person cannot communicate, isolation from friends, family and society often occurs. Nearly 10 million Americans have a speech, language and/or hearing disorder. Speech-language pathologists and deaf educators provide services to enhance the lives of those with communication disorders. All faculty members in Fontbonne Univ

ersity's Communication Disorders and Deaf Education department have the academic preparation and the practical experience to prepare teachers of the deaf or speech-language pathologists. Deaf education faculty members have teacher certification and speech-language pathology faculty members are licensed by the state of Missouri and certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Register today https://bit.ly/FBUSP25 for Virtual Spring Forum 2025. Andrea Marwah, Executive Director of IL Hands & Voices will speak about "IDEA and Advocacy: Protecting the Parent School Partnership".

This presentation will offer both parents and professionals the knowledge to successfully work with schools for their child’s/student’s educational future. Protection of the parent/school relationship is the most important aspect of successfully advocating for a child with disabilities. Professionals can easily educate parents in this model of parent/school relationship building without jeopardizing their position. IDEA protects parents; it’s up to the parents to protect their relationship with school personnel. Firsthand examples will be provided throughout the session from an advocate who has been teaching this session and advocating for students for over 15 years, beginning with her now 22-year-old deaf daughter.

Families, practitioners, faculty, and students - all are welcome!

Greetings alumni, community partners, clients, friends and colleagues. By now you may have heard that Fontbonne University, founded in 1923 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, has announced plans to cease operations after the summer 2025 term. The staff and faculty of the Department of Communication Disorders and Deaf Education (CDDE) woefully regret this news and are grieving the opportunity to continue our good work preparing future educators of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Speech-Language Pathologists to serve a world in need. You can be assured that in the time that remains, between now and August 2025, the CDDE team commits to maintaining high academic expectations for our current students and integrity in our intervention, grounded in our founder’s charism. Stay tuned to our social media for any further updates and opportunities to share your memories and reflections. In the meantime, we appreciate all the care, concern, and well wishes for our students, staff, faculty and alumni in this time of transition and new beginnings.
