As we enter the last weekend of the spooktacular season, here's your reminder to make sure your little ones wear comfortable shoes out trick or treating. While your fairy princess might desire to wear light-up glass slippers, these "costume shoes" often leave children with blisters or twisted ankles.

Self-Myofascial Release (SMR) is an effective way to massage out knots and tension in the bottom of the feet from the comfort of your home or office.

Sit in a chair and place a tennis ball on the floor in front of you.

Begin by placing the arch of your foot on the ball. Apply some pressure to feel the ball releasing tightness in the fascia.

Then, slowly begin to roll your foot over the ball. Roll up toward your toes slowly, pausing whenever you find a tight spot and holding for 30 seconds. Then, slowly roll back down towards your heel, pausing whenever you find a tight spot and holding for 30 seconds.

After you’ve completed one foot, switch sides.

If you are deal with the feeling of “pins and needles,” a burning sensation in your feet, legs, and arms, or intense stabbing pain, it could be peripheral neuropathy.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, diabetes is the most common cause of peripheral neuropathy. You may lose some feeling in your feet, which can become a serious issue when blisters or ulcers form on the foot, yet they can’t be felt, resulting in infection if not detected in time.

Anyone who has symptoms of peripheral neuropathy in their feet should see their podiatrist regularly. Your local podiatrist, Dr. Ray at Ankle and Foot Associates LLC St. Marys, is ready to see you!

Probably the most common (and preventable) cause of ingrown toenails is cutting the nail too short. If the nail is cut too far back on the toe, it allows the skin in front of the nail edge to get in the way of nail growth. As the nail regrows and gets longer after cutting it, it starts to dig into the skin.

Another cause of ingrown toenails is shoes that are too small or crush the toes together. Constant crushing and squeezing of the toes can affect how the nail grows. Compression of the toe will cause the nail to grow pressed too tight against the skin, causing ingrowth.

Heredity is the third cause. Your toenails might just have an extra pronounced curl by nature. Unlike natural curls in your hair that you may inherit from your parents, extra toenail curl isn’t quite as nice of genetic inheritance, as it can increase the risk of your nail growing into your skin.

Finally, traumatic injury to your toes—such as stubbing them or crushing them—may cause damage to your nail or push them into your skin.

Autumn, which kicks off the official start of boot season, is right around the corner. The weather will be changing soon, so it’s the perfect time to put steps in place to keep your feet feeling and looking their best through the season. Cooler weather can lead to cracking, pain, dryness, and in some cases, infection. Another good way to fight off the effects of the weather changes on your feet is to begin a deep-moisturizing routine. You can use your favorite moisturizer or look for one with tea tree oil, a natural anti-fungal, to keep your feet nourished and healthy.

Note: If you are dealing with cracks, open wounds, or ulcers, always consult with Dr. Ray here at Ankle & Foot Associates LLC. before using lotions or oils on your feet.
