Our Commitment to Quality

At St. Paul Engraving, quality is not a marketing statement—it is a standard that has guided our work since 1976.

For more than five decades, our craftsmen have partnered with mold manufacturers to deliver precision surface texturing and engraving that meets the demanding standards of modern injection molding applications.

Our commitment is built on three core principles:

• Precision craftsmanship — every surface is executed with attention to detail, ensuring textures perform consistently in production environments.

• Customer partnership — we work closely with mold manufacturers and engineers to ensure surface intent aligns with mold/tool geometry and production requirements.

• Reliable turnaround — maintaining efficient workflows so customers receive the quality they expect without unnecessary delays.

Surface engineering requires both advanced technology and skilled craftsmen who understand the importance of accuracy, consistency, and trust.

At St. Paul Engraving, those values have guided our work for over 50 years—and continue to shape every project we take on.

Complex mold geometries demand more than traditional surface treatments.

At St. Paul Engraving, our advanced 5-axis laser texturing systems allow us to apply engineered surface patterns across contoured mold cavities, complex geometries, and intricate tooling features with exceptional precision.

Unlike conventional processes, 5-axis laser technology enables:

• Uniform texture application across complex surfaces — maintaining consistency on curved or angled mold geometries.

• Controlled depth and pattern fidelity — ensuring surface features remain consistent throughout the cavity.

• Reduced secondary processing — eliminating many masking, blasting, or manual finishing steps.

For mold manufacturers, this means greater design freedom and more reliable production outcomes.

When combined with early collaboration during tooling development, laser texturing becomes more than a finishing step—it becomes part of the engineered solution.

When should surface texture be considered in mold development?

The answer: earlier than most teams think.

Surface texture should never be the last decision in mold manufacturing. The most successful applications approach surface strategy early—during the design and tooling development stages.

At St. Paul Engraving, we collaborate with mold manufacturers, engineers, and product designers early in the process to ensure surface intent aligns with tooling geometry, material behavior, and manufacturing constraints.

When surface strategy is addressed early, it unlocks important advantages:

• Expanded design potential — textures can be engineered to enhance aesthetics, functionality, and product differentiation.

• Improved mold manufacturability — planning surface treatments early helps avoid geometry conflicts, polishing limitations, and late-stage adjustments.

• More predictable production outcomes — aligning surface intent with tooling strategy reduces revisions and supports consistent results.

Surface engineering is not simply about applying texture.
It’s about ensuring the design vision and mold manufacturing process work together seamlessly.

That collaboration starts early.

St. Paul Engraving stays ahead by utilizing the latest technology advancements in the mold texturing and engraving industry. Although the technology itself has been around for the last decade there have been significant advancements the last few years. Most notably, femtosecond capabilities, flexi-pulse sources and Z focus shifters for improved surface finish and reduced machining times.

Femtosecond capabilities allow for a heightened level of precision delivering sharper geometries, finer lines; ultimately unlocking new design possibilities for all manufacturers i.e. optical patterns, brush effects, etc.

The Z focus shifter combined with a high-speed 3D scanning system allows the reduction of machining time up to 40%, depending on the application. This is achieved through the Z focus beam changing to match the contour of the mold without the machine axis actually moving. In result, this reduces the number of machine positions to complete a project while increasing the patch size at the same time.

The Z focus shifter paired with dual flexi-pulse sources adds a new level of quality to laser texturing, engraving and micromachining not previously achievable. The Flexi-pulse sources have the ability to adjust the pulse duration from 4-200 nanoseconds. This allows for greater control of surface finish while minimizing burr or recast and reducing micro fracturing, which is ideal for engraving cavities such as the one pictured here.

Lastly, having dual sources allows for the ability to switch between a 100-watt source and 30-watt source to achieve unprecedented surface finishes without compromising on time or quality. This process is clean, highly repeatable and allows for new and virtually limitless design possibilities not previously achievable through traditional techniques.

3R Automation Advantage

Automation is not an accessory.
It is a strategic manufacturing decision.

At St. Paul Engraving, our integrated 3R automation systems are engineered to increase precision, reduce risk, and compress production timelines across laser texturing, micromachining, and engraving operations.

In high-value tooling programs, part handling is one of the greatest sources of variability. Every transfer introduces opportunity for misalignment, tolerance stack, and delay.

3R automation eliminates that risk.

Operational advantages include:

✔ Standardized workholding across multiple processes
✔ Reduced manual transfers and setup variability
✔ Improved positional accuracy through consistent referencing
✔ Lights-out production for extended machine utilization
✔ Shortened lead times without sacrificing precision

By maintaining consistent part location from operation to operation, we protect dimensional integrity and improve repeatability—especially critical in complex 5-axis applications.

This is where vertical integration becomes measurable.

Precision Laser Texturing for Medical Applications

Take a look inside our facility as we execute one of our most advanced medical surface applications — precision laser texturing applied directly to medical screws and implant components using our 5-axis laser platform.

This is not aesthetic enhancement.
This is engineered surface performance.

Laser texturing in medical manufacturing delivers measurable functional outcomes when applied with controlled depth, uniformity, and geometric precision — particularly across complex thread profiles and cylindrical forms.

Through our advanced 5-axis capability, these components were engineered to achieve:

• Enhanced osseointegration — Controlled micro-textures promote improved bone-to-implant adhesion, supporting long-term stability and biocompatibility.

• Geometric consistency across complex forms — True 5-axis motion enables uniform surface application along fine threads and contoured geometries without repositioning error.

• Process efficiency and repeatability — Eliminating secondary blasting or coating steps reduces variability, shortens lead times, and ensures micron-level precision across production runs.

Surface engineering in medical manufacturing requires more than pattern application. It demands controlled energy delivery, repeatable referencing, and dimensional integrity throughout the process.

At St. Paul Engraving, we integrate advanced laser technology with precision workholding and automation infrastructure to deliver functional surface solutions for high-performance medical components.

From mold texturing to direct part applications, we engineer surfaces that enhance performance — not just appearance.
