Why Nothing Is Working: Executive Function, Emotional Regulation, and the Missing Middle

This presentation explores why traditional behavior strategies often fail when underlying executive functioning and regulation challenges are not addressed. We discuss the “missing middle” - the cognitive processes between understanding and ex*****on - and how difficulties with initiation, flexibility, working memory, and managing emotional intensity can look like defiance, avoidance, or lack of motivation. Parents will leave with a clearer framework for understanding behavior and practical tools to bridge the gap.

Presented by Kimberlee Ambach, the Founder and President of Elevated Outcomes Inc., an integrative practice in Northern Virginia specializing in executive functioning, social development, and advocacy for learners with Autism, ADHD, Anxiety, and twice-exceptional profiles. With a foundation in behavioral psychology and a neuroscience-informed framework, Kimberlee helps families better understand the cognitive and emotional processes underlying behavior and build functional, real-world skills. In addition to her direct clinical work, Kimberlee consults with and trains educational teams on executive functioning and neuro-affirming practices, helping bridge the gap between home and school environments.
