Blueberries (Vaccinium spp.)
boast more than a decade of studies supporting their ability to improve cognition, with much of the research coming from the Tufts University Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging.
👩🏾🦳👵🏾One study tested nine older adults with early memory changes. After drinking blueberry juice for 12 weeks, they showed improved paired associate learning and word list recall compared to demographically matched group drinking a placebo berry juice (Krikorian et al., 2010).
💜💙Dark purple-red-blue pigments in berries offer potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, heart-tonic, cognition-enhancing, and pain-relieving properties. Other noteworthy berries include tart cherries and dark purple grapes; however, almost any berry offers anti-aging benefits. Wild and frozen berries often offer more potent and bioavailable phytochemicals.
Dose: 1/2 to 1 cup daily of berries fresh, frozen, or 100 percent juice (or equivalent juice concentrate). 1/4 teaspoon up to three times daily of solid extract. Purchase organic if possible to avoid pesticide exposure.
