Chalazia, styes, hordeola? All of these terms are synonymous with bumps of the eyelid. Styes or hordeola tend to be painful and can affect the follicles at the root of eyelashes or oil glands of the eyelid. Chalazia are typically not painful but occur when the oil glands of the eyelid become
clogged.

What can you do at home to help treat a stye or chalazion?

1️⃣ Warm compresses: Soak a washcloth in warm water (not hot enough to burn your skin) and massage this over the eyelids for 10-15 mintues for 3 times per day. This helps to
open the clogged oil glands at the margin of the eyelids.

2️⃣ Lid scrubs: Extra bacteria on the eyelids can make these problems worse. It’s helpful to use baby shampoo over the base of the eyelashes to make sure your eyelids stay clean. This is helpful to do twice a day or at least once during bath time. Some pharmacies sell
eyelid wipes (Ocusoft is an example) that can be used for this purpose

3️⃣ As tempting as it may be, DO NOT attempt to drain or pop a stye or chalazia. Doing so
may cause scarring or a larger infection of the eyelid tissues to develop. Some severe or longstanding chalazia need to be drained by a surgical procedure by your ophthalmologist. Rarely antibiotics are needed if a stye is suspected to be infected.
