On Friday, we officially launched KidSafeHQ, a first-of-its-kind digital platform created to help families across the state navigate the real safety challenges kids face both online and offline. KidSafeHQ brings trusted resources, expert guidance, and practical tools together in one accessible place for parents and caregivers.

Thank you to Senator Richard Blumenthal, Office of Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Mayor Caroline Simmons, Mayor Barbara Smyth, and State Sen. Stephen Harding for attending our launch event and showing your support, and to Brian Herrick, Sarah DeGue, PhD, Jen Weedon, and Dahlia Locke for serving as panelists.

A heartfelt thank you to Impact Fairfield County for their belief in our vision and the generous $100,000 grant to bring KidSafeHQ to life. Your support is helping us equip families with the knowledge and confidence they need to keep kids safe today and into the future.

Black History Month isn't just about history; it's about the work that is still unfolding.

In 2005, Tarana Burke founded Just Be, Inc., and began using the phrase “me too” to help survivors—especially Black girls and women—find each other and begin healing.

When spread globally in 2017, Tarana brought the focus back where it belonged: on survivors, empathy, and building leadership from lived experience. She has always insisted that ending sexual violence is inseparable from racial and gender justice.

We are grateful to Tarana Burke for her decades of steady organizing, centering survivors, telling the truth about systems that harm, and making sure no one has to face trauma alone.

Preventing sexual assault, abuse, and exploitation means stopping harm before it begins. We prioritize prevention so more children and community members can grow up and live in a society free from sexual violence.

In the 2024/2025 fiscal year, our Education Department delivered 795 presentations, partnering with 45 schools, community agencies, and local colleges.

Together, we reached over 22,000 community members, including students of all ages, educators, healthcare professionals, mental health clinicians, parents, community leaders, and other stakeholders.

By equipping both children and adults with practical knowledge and tools, we are helping to build a culture rooted in empathy, safety, and accountability.

If you are interested in having our prevention educators come to your school or community center to present, please email lcampbell@therowancenter.org

Black History Month celebrates the courageous leaders who refused to be silent.

In 1944, Recy Taylor was 24, walking home from church in Alabama, when seven white men kidnapped her at gunpoint and r***d her. They left her on the side of the road.

She reported them.

During Jim Crow, that choice put her life at risk. One man confessed. No one was prosecuted. Her home was burned. An all-white grand jury dismissed the case in minutes.

But she did not take her story back.

Her voice helped ignite a national outcry and shaped the movement for justice that followed. Today, we carry Recy's story forward in how we listen, how we believe survivors, and how we show up each and every day.

As we reflected on the past year in our latest annual report, one thing was clear—the need for our services is growing. More survivors are reaching out, parents are seeking support earlier, and schools and community partners are asking for more prevention education.

In the 2024/2025 year, we met that need by providing 8,244 total services for victims and survivors; 4,093 helpline calls; 1,141 Trauma Recovery Clinic sessions; 6,976 crisis counseling services, including accompaniments to hospitals, police stations, and courtrooms; a 68% increase in outreach activities; and 224 referrals to partner organizations.

Let's continue to grow together. Learn more at therowancenter.org/annual-report

Black History Month is not only history—it’s ongoing work.

The movement to end sexual violence has always been shaped by Black advocates, organizers, and healers who insisted that survival, dignity, and justice belong together. Before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in 1955, she was a sexual assault investigator. In her early years with the NAACP, she worked to protect Black men from false accusations and lynchings, and to ensure Black survivors of sexual violence by white perpetrators could seek justice. She also led a national campaign against sexual assaults on Black women.

We hold gratitude for that legacy and responsibility to carry it forward in how we listen, how we lead, and how we build safety today.

Over the past few years, the work at The Rowan Center has changed. More survivors of sexual violence and trauma are reaching out, and the complexity of what we are being asked to hold has grown. Parents are seeking support earlier, particularly around the risks children face online. Schools and community partners are asking for more prevention education because the research is clear: education makes a difference.

As the work evolved, the way we show up evolved, too.

This year’s Annual Report reflects that shift—bringing The Rowan Center, the Trauma Recovery Practice, and KidSafeHQ together under one shared identity, grounded in the same purpose: preventing harm, responding to crisis, and supporting healing over time.

Last week, the Trafficking Survivors Relief Act was signed into law—an important step forward for trafficking survivors nationwide. This legislation recognizes that survivors who were forced or coerced into non-violent crimes should not carry lifelong criminal records for their exploitation, helping remove barriers to housing, employment, and stability so survivors have a real chance to heal and rebuild.

Washington, D.C. — Today, President Trump signed into law Congressman Russell Fry’s (SC-07) Trafficking Survivors Relief Act in the Oval Office, with Congressman Fry in attendance, marking a major victory for survivors of human trafficking and a critical step toward restoring justice for those ...
