This week, our Stanford EM International (SEMI) Global and Population Health team—many of whom usually work from across the globe—came together at Stanford for an amazing strategic retreat!

The team focused on key topics like global health education, research, health systems, time management, personal branding, and a deep-dive SWOT analysis.

They were also fortunate to learn from an inspiring lineup of speakers, including Drs. Tracy Rabin, Junaid Razzak, Adam Aluisio, Kelli O’Laughlin, Arghavan Salles, Tracy Sanson, Lisa Medoff, and Andra Blomkalns.

And they had the wonderful opportunity to connect with Bay Area global health leaders, including CIGH founder Dr. Michele Barry and UCSF’s Drs. Nicolaus Glomb and Anneka Hooft.

How is medical education addressing LGBTQ+ health training?

A new study led by Stanford Social EM Fellow, Dr. Elaine Hsiang, reports an increase in LGBTQ+ content across some U.S. residency programs but finds significant variation across specialties. Key barriers include regional differences, limited curricular time, and lack of faculty expertise.

"Stanford’s EM Innovation Fellowship trains fellows to think, conceptualize, and achieve healthcare improvement through technology, systems change, digital tools, and more. For me, it’s about using design thinking and technology to tackle real challenges in emergency care."

Dr. Rana Kabeer reflects on two impactful years as an Innovation & Design Fellow at Stanford Emergency Medicine.

An alum of the Stanford EM Residency Program, Dr. Kabeer explored how AI can be integrated into clinical practice and helped develop new curricula for residents and faculty.

Can a chatbot make it easier to talk about addiction?

Stanford Emergency Medicine's Dr. Brian Suffoletto teamed up with Stanford Medicine’s Research Technology team to develop MICA — a Secure GPT-4–powered chatbot designed to support young adults recovering from alcohol use disorder.

Early findings suggest users feel more comfortable—and less judged—opening up to MICA, helping reduce one of the biggest barriers to care: stigma.
