📣 September is Sepsis Awareness Month, and CMQCC is releasing our revised toolkit for improving diagnosis and treatment of obstetric sepsis on September 5.

The V2.0 toolkit incorporates expertise from a 65-member task force of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, patient advocates, and experts in public health and social determinants of health. CMQCC is grateful to our collaborators for their dedication to this critical work.

Register for our toolkit release webinar this Friday: https://bit.ly/SepsisToolkit

Obstetric sepsis is a life-threatening condition that can follow an infection. Also known as “maternal sepsis,” it’s the fifth-leading cause of maternal deaths in California (2019-2021) and is highly preventable.

Use this toolkit to protect lives. Together we must reduce obstetric sepsis deaths in California.

Mom Lakethia was diagnosed with while pregnant with her first-born child. This put her health at risk in future pregnancies, and created risk for her second-born child, too.

“I told my doctors, ‘I’m at a high risk for preeclampsia and eclampsia,’” said Lakethia, when she was pregnant with her second born. “They asked how I knew, and I shared I had it with my previous pregnancy, so I know what’s going on with my body.”

From her experience, Lakethia knows the importance of learning about preeclampsia and of self-advocacy. She also suggests women and birthing people get extra support if they have health risks during pregnancy.

“Definitely (find) a doula, someone who’s educated about preeclampsia,” she advises. “And people who have gone through preeclampsia are your best teachers, so reach out to people who are in the community.”

This month, we recognize for providing meaningful, non-medical support to women, birthing people, and babies when they need it most.

Across California, trained and certified doulas contribute to healthier outcomes for moms and babies. Research shows doulas’ coaching and companionship may help improve rates of vaginal births, decrease labor time, reduce the need for analgesia, and contribute to a more satisfying birth experience.

Doulas also provide coaching for breastfeeding, an evidence-based feeding practice that significantly contributes to . And by working with mothers and families in personalized ways, doulas can bridge cultural needs and help navigate healthcare systems.

To our state’s professional doulas, many of whom bring a deep, personal commitment to their work: Thank you for supporting our mothers, babies, and families with passion and heart! We applaud you!

is a dangerous pregnancy condition and a leading cause of preterm birth, according to Preeclampsia Foundation.

When babies are born prematurely because of preeclampsia, they are at risk of arriving at a very low birth weight, and can face a higher risk of chronic health issues.

For clinicians caring for these tiny warriors, having the right resources is essential. CPQCC’s Nutritional Support of the Very Low Birth Weight (VLBW) Infant toolkit shares optimum ways to manage preemies’ nutritional needs to prevent nutritional and growth deficits, and to ensure ideal long-term outcomes.
