📣 Last call! Registration for the CARE Collaborative closes October 1

CPQCC recognizes the positive impact many hospitals make on improving health outcomes in their local communities. The Collaborating for Access and Resources in Early Life (CARE) Collaborative aims to extend that impact even further, with a focus on optimizing healthcare delivery for NICU infants and their families by meeting their medical, psychological, and social needs.

Three reasons to join the CARE Collaborative:

1️⃣ Spot the Needs Early: Screen for health-related social needs (HRSNs) for all NICU families
2️⃣ Connect Families with Support: Make strong referrals to community resources and Enhanced Care Management (ECM)
3️⃣ Close the Loop: Track and boost connection rates so families get the help they need after discharge

NICU parents face many challenges on their child’s , including the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a gastrointestinal disease that can be deadly.

NEC affects 10% of very low birthweight babies and symptoms can begin suddenly, with no warning.

This NEC Awareness Month and beyond, CPQCC helps teams learn about newborns’ nutritional needs, boost rates of human milk feeding, and medical conditions that can be prevented follow evidence-based practices. This month, we recognize for providing meaningful, non-medical support to women, birthing people, and babies when they need it most.

Across California, trained and certified doulas contribute to healthier outcomes for moms and babies. Research shows doulas’ coaching and companionship may help improve rates of vaginal births, decrease labor time, reduce the need for analgesia, and contribute to a more satisfying birth experience.

Doulas also provide coaching for breastfeeding, an evidence-based feeding practice that significantly contributes to . And by working with mothers and families in personalized ways, doulas can bridge cultural needs and help navigate healthcare systems.

To our state’s professional doulas, many of whom bring a deep, personal commitment to their work: Thank you for supporting our mothers, babies, and families with passion and heart! We applaud you!

is a dangerous pregnancy condition and a leading cause of preterm birth, according to Preeclampsia Foundation.

When babies are born prematurely because of preeclampsia, they are at risk of arriving at a very low birth weight, and can face a higher risk of chronic health issues.

For clinicians caring for these tiny warriors, having the right resources is essential. CPQCC’s Nutritional Support of the Very Low Birth Weight (VLBW) Infant toolkit shares optimum ways to manage preemies’ nutritional needs to prevent nutritional and growth deficits, and to ensure ideal long-term outcomes.

Today, California and seven other U.S. states are recognizing Necrotizing Enterocolitis Awareness Day.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a potentially fatal gastrointestinal disease, affects very low birth weight and is especially dangerous for babies born early, with still-developing digestive systems.

Exclusive human milk feeding and following evidence-based guidelines are critical care practices for protecting the lives of neonates and warriors.

begins with phenomenal patient care—but the true impact of California’s nurses is much greater.

Every day, nurses in hospitals, community health centers, clinics, and patients’ homes provide extraordinary care to California’s moms and babies. Our state’s nurses support nearly 11% of U.S. births, per provisional CDC data (2023)—and each year, they touch the lives of hundreds of thousands of families.

California’s nurses are clinical experts. They are advocates. Scientists. Leaders. Counselors. Educators. Our nurses are compassionate. They are empathetic. And so much more.

We celebrate these remarkable professionals for their excellence and tireless dedication to moms, babies, and families! ! We appreciate you this week and all year long! ❤️

spotlights a serious condition that can cause high blood pressure and preterm birth, putting the lives of moms and babies at risk. In the U.S., health outcomes data show Black women and birthing people are more likely to be impacted due to stress from heightened exposure to racism.

Low-dose aspirin (LDA) in pregnancy, as recommended by a healthcare provider, is the only known effective solution to prevent .
