Bailey comes to work in the shop with me.

She is my guard 🐶 dog. 😂

Please don’t interrupt her nap. I think the diffuser and nature music coming through the open windows has zonked her out.

I’ve been zipping through my turmeric and black pepper tincture for the past month so it was time to get more going.

Remember, herbal medicine is NOT usually a “quick fix” as it assists the body to do what it inherently does, HEAL! And making those herbal helpers takes time as well.

🌿 New Research (2024): The Wound Healing Mechanics of Cleavers (Galium aparine) 🩹

As we detail in our new infographic, Galium Aparine Wound Healing Science, the traditional use of this "forgotten" herb for scalds, burns, and ulcers is no longer just folklore.

A breaking study published just last year in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies has scientifically validated the "vulnerary" (wound healing) capacity of Cleavers, offering a detailed look at how it repairs tissue at the cellular level.

Here is the pharmacological breakdown from the study:

⚡ The Race for Closure: Cleavers vs. Pharmaceuticals
This was the most striking finding. Researchers compared Galium against Allantoin, a standard pharmaceutical wound-healing agent.

The Result: The Cleavers extract reached nearly 100% wound closure within 24 hours!

The Comparison: It significantly outperformed Allantoin, which didn't show significant effects until the 12-hour mark. The herb actively promoted the migration of fibroblasts (the cells that build tissue) to physically close the gap faster.

🦠 Antimicrobial Barrier
Wound healing cannot happen if an infection is present. The study found that Galium exhibited significant antibacterial activity, specifically against Staphylococcus aureus (the most common pathogen in infected wounds). It acts as both a shield and a repair crew.

⚗️ The Chemical Fingerprint
Using advanced chromatography (HPTLC), researchers mapped the chemistry responsible. They confirmed a robust profile of iridoids, saponins, and tannins—compounds known to tighten tissue and modulate inflammation.

🛡️ Safety & Viability
Crucially, the study confirmed that the extract was safe for delicate new skin. Instead of damaging new tissue (cytotoxicity), it actually increased cell viability, nourishing the human skin cells needed for regeneration.

The Verdict: Cleavers offers a triple-action benefit: it kills bacteria, scavenges free radicals, and physically accelerates tissue repair faster than some standard treatments.

🌿 Herb Science: Unlocking the Immune Potential of Cleavers (Galium aparine) 🛡️

Modern research is finally catching up to what traditional herbalists have known for centuries: Cleavers is a powerhouse for the lymphatic system. As detailed in our new Galium Aparine Immune Support Infographic, two significant studies (2020 and 2024) have mapped out exactly how this common hedgerow plant boosts our defenses.

Here is the breakdown of the "immune architecture" discussed in the research:

1️⃣ The "First Responders" (Spleen & NK Cells)
A 2024 study looked at how Cleavers extract helps a suppressed immune system bounce back. The results were profound:

Restoring the Hub: The extract significantly recovered spleen weight and promoted the growth of T and B lymphocytes.

NK Cell Activation: Natural Killer (NK) cells are our body's innate defense against viruses. The study found that Galium treatment jumped NK cell activity up to 46.6%, restoring function nearly to the level of a healthy control group!

2️⃣ The Chemistry: Polysaccharides vs. Polyphenols
A 2020 investigation dissected the plant to see which compounds are doing the heavy lifting. This is a huge tip for medicine makers:

The Power of Water: The study found that the raw aqueous extract (essentially a strong tea) displayed the highest immune-stimulating activity—even higher than isolated chemical fractions.

The Drivers: The Polysaccharides (complex sugars) and Pectins were identified as the primary drivers of immune activation.

The Protectors: Meanwhile, the Polyphenols (rich in chlorogenic acid) served a different role. They provided superior antioxidant protection, scavenging free radicals to protect healthy tissues while the immune system fights the battle.

📜 The Takeaway: This data validates the traditional preparation of Cleavers as a water infusion (tea) or fresh juice. Water efficiently extracts the heavy polysaccharides needed to wake up the immune system, while simultaneously pulling the antioxidants needed for cellular protection.

Whew… it’s been a loooong couple weeks.

Had to winterize my little apothecary before the icemagedon came through a couple weeks ago and then no power for a whole week.

Just got back out today to turn all the water back on and the water pipes are good! Yay!!

Doing a little clean up and catch up work so I wanted to make me a nice cup of tea to sip while I work. The past two weeks have been stressful and heavy so when I saw this recipe from Rosemary Gladstar, I wanted to try it. Hibiscus is not one of my favorite flavor profiles personally, but it is so medicinal I made it anyway.

Enjoy the recipe below if you want to give it a try.

'Twas The Night Before Yuletide. . . ✨🌙

'Twas the night before Yuletide and all through the glen
Not a creature was stirring, not a fox, not a hen.
A mantle of snow shone brightly that night
As it lay on the ground, reflecting moonlight.

The faeries were nestled all snug in their trees,
Unmindful of flurries and a chilly north breeze.
The elves and the gnomes were down in their burrows,
Sleeping like babes in their soft earthen furrows.

When lo! The earth moved with a thunderous quake,
Causing chairs to fall over and dishes to break.
The Little Folk scrambled to get on their feet
Then raced to the river where they usually meet.

“What happened?” they wondered, they questioned, they probed,
As they shivered in night clothes, some bare-armed, some robed.
“What caused the earth's shudder? What caused her to shiver?”
They all spoke at once as they stood by the river.

Then what to their wondering eyes should appear
But a shining gold light in the shape of a sphere.
It blinked and it twinkled, it winked like an eye,
Then it flew straight up and was lost in the sky.

Before they could murmur, before they could bustle,
There emerged from the crowd, with a swish and a rustle,
A stately old crone with her hand on a cane,
Resplendent in green with a flowing white mane.

As she passed by them the old crone's perfume,
Smelling of meadows and flowers abloom,
Made each of the fey folk think of the spring
When the earth wakes from slumber and the birds start to sing.

“My name is Gaia,” the old crone proclaimed
in a voice that at once was both wild and tamed,
“I've come to remind you, for you seem to forget,
that Yule is the time of re-birth, and yet…”

“I see no hearth fires, hear no music, no bells,
The air isn't filled with rich fragrant smells
Of baking and roasting, and simmering stews,
Of cider that's mulled or other hot brews.”

“There aren't any children at play in the snow,
Or houses lit up by candles’ glow.
Have you forgotten, my children, the fun
Of celebrating the rebirth of the sun?”

She looked at the fey folk, her eyes going round,
As they shuffled their feet and stared at the ground.
Then she smiled the smile that brings light to the day,
“Come, my children,” she said, “Let's play.”

They gathered the mistletoe, gathered the holly,
Threw off the drab and drew on the jolly.
They lit a big bonfire, and they danced and they sang.
They brought out the bells and clapped when they rang.

They strung lights on the trees, and bows, oh so merry,
In colours of cranberry, bayberry, cherry.
They built giant snowmen and adorned them with hats,
Then surrounded them with snow birds, and snow cats and bats.

Then just before dawn, at the end of their fest,
Before they went homeward to seek out their rest,
The fey folk they gathered ‘round their favourite oak tree
And welcomed the sun ‘neath the tree's finery.

They were just reaching home when it suddenly came,
The gold light returned like an arrow-shot flame.
It lit on the tree top where they could see from afar
The golden-like sphere turned into a star.

The old crone just smiled at the beautiful sight,
"Happy Yuletide, my children," she whispered. "Good night."
