CPVETS would like to officially welcome Dr. Liam McConnell to our team!

I am from Baton Rouge, Louisiana originally but moved to Lexington, Kentucky very early in my life. I went to high school there and graduated from Centre college in Danville, Kentucky as a biology major. I always knew I wanted to work with animals and began doing so as early as 8th grade, but it was during college and the year following that I got very serious about it. I have had a broad range of experiences from research in tropical rainforests with leaf cutter ants to fast paced emergency settings with small animals and exotics. I eventually ended up in vet school at Virginia Tech, and this is where I adopted my cat, Margaret and ultimately decided to accept a position with CPVets! I enjoy bodybuilding and hiking in the mountains when I have time, and I also enjoy playing video games and anything Lord of the Rings related. My special interest is in feline medicine and bettering not only their experience and treatment in a hospital setting, but their owners experience as well in caring for them at home.

As part of our new clinic renovation, we decided that as an ER, we need to be operational regardless of what else is going on in the area. We added a 350kW 3 phase generator to our plans, assuming that we may never actually need it. The storms yesterday knocked out power to our clinic and the generator worked as expected, allowing us to stay open and fully functioning during the outage!

Did you know that veterinarians and Certified Veterinary Technicians need to complete up to 30 hours of continuing education every 2 years! Dr. Loar and our lead technician, Bonnie, recently attended the American Veterinary Medical Association convention in Austin, Texas. While there, they learned many new things that could benefit our patients.

They also looked at and purchased new equipment that will help keep CPVETS at the cutting edge of technology.

Thank you very much to the Upland Bird Hunt Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society for hosting Dr. Loar at their Future Hunters and Handlers Day. Dog handlers had an opportunity to learn about many common problems encountered in the field, including porcupine quills, lacerations, and allergic reactions.

This opportunity came about when one of their members' dogs, Ares, jumped over a log and impaled himself on a stick. The stick went through both his chest and abdomen, causing a lot of damage on the way through. Following stabilization and surgery with Dr. Tartaglino, Ares developed a life-threatening systemic infection and was transferred to the Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center (PVSEC) for additional surgery and treatment. Ares was an amazing patient and has fully recovered.
