While Harry (Billy Crystal) had a lot of insight on life, male & female relationship dynamics and Sally’s personality, he obviously wasn’t a hormone expert! I couldn’t resist playing on this scene to illustrate some aspects of thyroid & hormone health that I don’t often see talked about.

Sally has the type A “overachiever” personality that often leads to adrenal gland burnout and in turn hypothyroid function. Yes there are a lot of other underlying causes that are very individual from person to person, but this is a relatively common thread 🧵

Food sensitivities again can be complex, and usually start due to environmental factors or decreased thyroid function. But the more you decrease/restrict foods the less your gut is able to digest and absorb your food thus a downward spiral of more restriction & more bloating 🌀

If addressing thyroid health was a cornerstone of treating ADD/ADHD - well it would be a lot more root cause approach to managing your attention deficits. If your thyroid isn’t functioning well it’s really hard to focus and accomplish anything 😶‍🌫️

Iodine is often dismissed and/or even vilified as toxic to the thyroid. The thing is there are many organs in the body that rely heavily on iodine for optimal function, NOT just the thyroid!!! While you need to do the appropriate testing and work with a trained professional 🙋🏻‍♀️ before supplementing with iodine, it can be a huge missing link 🔗 for those struggling with:

❇️ hypothyroid
❇️ autoimmune thyroid conditions (Hashimotos & Graves)
❇️ PCOS
❇️ fibromyalgia
❇️ Fibrocystic breasts

and many other health conditions!

Dr. David Brownstein and Dr. Guy Abraham’s work and research on iodine have been very enlightening for myself & my clients.

At first, the water brought relief to the intensity of the contractions. I had a few contractions and felt nothing! But within minutes of being in the water, the contractions started coming one after another no break between them. I leaned my head and arms over the side of the pool with my belly down in the water. Jeremy held my left hand, I squeezed his hand as hard as I could and didn’t dare let go.

I crammed my face into the side of the pool and reached my right hand out for someone to grab. It felt too scary, too intense without someone holding both my hands. My midwife held my right hand and kept encouraging & reassuring me that I was doing really well. Andrea told me to “use my man voice” as I was groaning so I tried to keep my groans deep and low.

I started to feel more and more scared and exhausted, I kept thinking “there is no way I can do this! I just want it all to stop now!” I blurted out “I can’t do this!” and Andrea told me “Yes you can Bekah, you’ve done this before and you are going to do it again!!” At this point I could feel baby moving down through me and I started to feel so nauseous. Before I had a chance to ask for my peppermint oil I puked. The next thing I knew everyone was saying they could see baby’s head, I was feeling the urge to push and my midwife encouraged me to take deep slow breaths. I felt the ring of fire, gave a few last pushes and baby was out! It was 9pm, my midwife brought baby up to my chest. Then I saw that it was a girl! We named her Ila Jane (we liked the name Ila and Jane after my Mom’s middle name).

I was relieved it was over, but felt so exhausted & had a really painful kink in my back. I laid on the couch for a while with Ila and Jeremy spoon fed me the chicken soup. My midwife told me I would feel so much better in the morning and I didn’t believe her one bit! Sure enough, she was right, I felt significantly better when I woke up the next morning! Throughout the whole crazy labor experience, I felt very supported, empowered, and cared for by my midwife & support team! The saddest part about moving away from State College is that if we have more babies Kelsey won’t be my midwife 😭

Part 5: For Real this Time!

Around 6:30 we decided it was time to go back inside. I started a load of laundry, washed some dishes, & put together a snack tray for my birth team; stopping every 3-4 minutes to breath through a contraction. I made a BIG mineral drink and pulled a super cube of chicken soup out of the freezer to warm, so it was ready for me to eat after baby was born. Kelsey and her birth assistant Natasha arrived and started setting things up.

Jeremy had the “fun” task of emptying the birth pool because the water was cold (since he had filled it early that morning when I thought I was in labor) and refilling it with hot water.

Around 7:30 I filled my diffuser with lavender, clary sage and myrrh, turned on the worship & hymn playlist I had made for labor, and felt the contractions kick up a notch. I put my birth ball on the chaise of our couch and leaned over the ball during contractions. Within a few minutes I felt the need to groan during the contractions as well. Once a contraction would end, I’d chat with everyone. When a contraction would start, I would stop talking and focus on welcoming & breathing through the contraction.

The birth pool was ready and everyone was encouraging me to get in, but Andrea hadn’t arrived yet. I knew that once I got in the water things would get intense & baby would come fast. I wasn’t feeling ready for it all yet, so I lingered with the birth ball a little longer.

Around 8pm Andrea arrived with her daughter Maddie (I had been at her birth 11 months before!). I felt a sense of relief and excitement and was somehow able to ignore the contractions and talk through them for 10 minutes or so. Andrea said when she walked in she was certain I wasn’t in labor and thought the contractions had stopped again! After chatting with everyone for a while I started to feel really agitated and realized I needed to disengage from the conversation. It was impossible for me to ignore the contractions anymore! Jeremy was still doing stuff around the house, but I couldn’t get through the contractions without him any more so I asked him to come hold my hands. I was ready to get in the water now!

Part 4: Labor “To Do” List

My mom left with Leah around noon to go back to Rochester and I was super intent on following the game plan my midwife gave me to a “T”.

I took a nap, did Miles circuit and then mixed up and drank the “Midwife’s Brew” (it was very specific amounts of lemon tea, apricot nectar, castor oil & almond butter) by 3pm. I had a contraction as soon as I finished that drink! Then another one 10 minutes later. Then another one 5 minutes after that and then on and off for the next hour.

My sweet friend dropped off a little baby gift and prayed with me! Then the one and only AMAZING Dr. Morgan was able to get me in for an adjustment at 4pm. She got my hips all aligned and helped make sure baby was in an optimal position. As I walked out of the chiropractor I started having contractions every 5 minutes.

Jeremy and I went for a walk around the neighborhood. It was high 40s and lightly raining. As I was walking the contractions grew closer and closer together and started to last longer. I texted my friend Andrea who I had invited to attend the birth (I had been at her second home birth a year before!). Andrea lived two hours away and I knew if she was going to be there when baby arrived she needed to leave now! After 10 minutes I called her and told her she better come quick!!

By 6pm I wasn’t ready to go inside just yet, but I knew I didn’t want to walk too far from the house. So we continued to walk around the block right around the house. Jeremy kept joking and making me laugh so hard that I peed my pants & the contractions got way more intense! I had to stop and bend over a little bit with each contraction, I couldn’t walk through them anymore. At this point Jeremy called Kelsey and told her we were ready for her to come!

Part 3: Is this for real?

My due date was Wednesday January 24, 2024 and I’m really into dates so I was so hoping baby would be born on the 24th of 2024! But it didn’t happen that way. I did a coffee e***a that afternoon (first one since I had found out I was pregnant). I felt so refreshed afterwards & the “sharp” feeling contractions faded into the more “smooth” contractions I remembered from my early labor with Leah.

Then I went to my 40 week appointment. I still wasn’t dilated anymore than I had been the week before, but my midwife offered to strip my membranes and I was 💯 percent on board with that idea. At this point I was like “whatever it takes I’ll do it” - boy were those my famous last lines lol! My midwife thought baby’s position might be a little off so she recommended I use a rebozo scarf & do the “Three Sisters” positions to help get baby in better alignment.

That evening Jeremy and I watched a movie while he helped me do the various inversions, stretches & positions to help start labor. I was having consistent contractions from 5pm on, but they would ebb and flow so I tried to not give them much thought.

I don’t remember when I went to bed, but by 3 or 4 am the contractions were consistent enough I couldn’t just lay in bed anymore. So I got up sat on my birth ball, moved around and did anything I could to keep contractions going. I started tracking contractions around 7am, they were 5 minutes apart & 45 seconds long. I asked Jeremy to fill the birth tub just to be prepared. But then the contractions started to space out big time by 9 am I was only having 1 every 30 minutes- 1 hour.

So I updated my midwife and told her “I’m done! I can’t handle this start and stop one more night!” She totally agreed and immediately had a plan of how to get labor restarted. She told me to eat, take a nap, do the miles circuit, see if I could get an appointment with my chiropractor & then drink the “Midwives Brew”, go for a walk and keep her updated. So I ate a little bit (my stomach was feeling a little off) and started my “Labor To Do” list.

Part 2: Prodromal Labor
Most of January I had some contractions on and off at night. They would usually start after midnight and taper off by very early morning. Combine this with BAD pregnancy insomnia, heartburn, and my thyroid deciding to flip to hyperactive rather than hypoactive; I was feeling so exhausted and done. I had tried all the mineral mocktails, magnesium, magnesium lotion, etc. nothing helped bring sleep. Talc free Tums saved my poor esophagus from being burned alive by all the heartburn I had at night. I now know these were all signs and symptoms of poor histamine breakdown, iodine deficiency, & mold (yes the apartment we thought was safe after our first toxic mold exposure actually wasn’t, and but that’s another story for another time!).

Thursday, January 18th I had the most consistent contractions I had experienced thus far. I decided to get up around 6 am and sit on my exercise ball to see if it helped them continue to progress. Started timing them around 6:30 am as Jeremy was heading out to work. Told him I’d call if things picked up, but it all stopped by 6:50 am. UGH!!

Friday, January 19th I again started experiencing consistent minute long contractions early in the morning. Started tracking them around 5 am and decided to get in our bathtub, as my midwife had said if it was the real deal the water would help things continue or if it wasn’t then it would fizzle out.

The contractions were 3-5 minutes apart, lasting a minute, but they were really sharp feeling. Didn’t realize it at the time, but that’s an indication that baby’s position isn’t optimal. Around 5:30 am we called my midwife and told her we thought this might be it! Then called my mom who was going to drive down from Rochester to help with Leah during labor. It was snowing and so that was making travel for everyone a lot more iffy. But I remember being happy about the baby being born on the 19th, because Leah’s birthday is September 18th and we thought it be easy to remember the dates haha! Continued in comments ⬇️

Part 1: “The backstory”

Well it’s only taken me a year to write this out! One week from Ila’s first birthday so feeling all the feels as I reflect on her birth story 🥰😭

My mindset, mood and outlook throughout my pregnancy with Ila was calm and positive overall (even through 14+ weeks of nausea and vomiting). I had a life changing spiritual awakening shortly before finding out I was pregnant that drastically changed me & my marriage for the better. I also started thyroid medication right at the beginning of my pregnancy, because I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. After 1 1/2 years of trying to heal my thyroid with functional nutrition, it was still not in a good place. I was not going to mess around with the risk of miscarriage due to elevated thyroid hormone levels. I look back and wish I had started thyroid medication much sooner as I think it would have had a positive impact on my quality of life. Live & learn ✌🏻

During my second trimester, per the recommendation of my midwife I read a book called “Redeeming Childbirth” by Angie Tolpin. While there were parts of the book that were very wordy and other sections I didn’t entirely agree with; I wish had read the book during my first pregnancy. Angie, the author had also experienced pregnancies with debilitating nausea and it’s always encouraging to know you’re not alone in the experience.

The whole premise of the book was no matter what kind of pregnancy we have and no matter where or how we give birth, it’s all an opportunity to invite the Lord into this very important and transformative life experience. Pregnancy and birth are opportunities to worship the Lord because they are spiritual experiences just as much as they are physical. She actually acknowledged that the majority of women who give birth experience some amount of pain; but the pain is not without purpose and it’s God’s strength that delivers us through it. This was so refreshing and encouraging to me. Continued in the comments ⬇️

A little tough love ❤️ for your Friday. Being a mom is challenging, having little kids can be really hard at times! Although I don’t believe hard is the same thing as BAD; I do see a lot of moms making choices that inevitably make life unnecessarily difficult. I’m not saying that if you eat balanced meals & meal prep it will solve all your problems and your kids will never melt down. That’s not true or realistic! BUT when your & your kids’ blood sugar is balanced, when you have food that is fuel ⛽️ in you & your kids, the normal everyday stressors (and even the random bigger stressors) DO NOT impact you nearly as much. You become more resilient.

Not eating enough or eating in a way that has you riding the blood sugar roller coaster 🎢 all day is like punching 🥊 a hole 🕳️ in the bottom of your bucket 🪣 and letting all your precious & limited energy leak out 🫠

You can’t pour into your kids, your spouse, your job, community, etc when your bucket 🪣 is empty!!!

It doesn’t have to be complicated, you don’t have to do it perfectly, just start adding more protein, more vegetables, more fruits, more whole grains and see where it leads you next!!
