Movement Is Medicine: Chiropractors Bring Sports Science to the Capitol
PCA Sports Working Group partners with Legislative Health Services for Chiropractic Health Month
HARRISBURG, Pa. — As athletic injuries and sedentary lifestyles rise across the Commonwealth, the Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association marked National Chiropractic Health Month with a hands-on demonstration of what chiropractic care truly represents: science, skill, and service.
On Oct. 9, the PCA Sports Working Group, in partnership with the Pennsylvania House and Senate Legislative Health Services, hosted a Sports Chiropractic Health Screening and Education Day at the State Capitol. The event provided lawmakers and staff with a firsthand look at how chiropractors apply movement science to enhance performance, prevent injury, and restore healthy function.
Legislators participated in evidence-based screenings and exercise consultations led by Dr. Shawn Sebora, D.C., CCSP, of Nittany Valley Chiropractic Center in State College. Her work highlighted chiropractic care as a frontline resource for musculoskeletal performance and recovery.
“Our bodies are built to move,” Sebora said. “When that motion breaks down, pain is just the symptom; function is the real issue. Chiropractic care restores movement safely and effectively so people can live and perform better.”
Every major professional and collegiate sports organization now includes chiropractors on their care teams. Yet, in Pennsylvania, chiropractors remain excluded from high school sideline and return-to-play protocols due to outdated policy barriers, a gap that limits access to qualified movement specialists.
“What we demonstrated today wasn’t theory; it’s the same model used by Olympic teams, universities worldwide, and every professional sports team,” Barba said. “It’s time Pennsylvania athletes, from youth leagues to weekend warriors, have access to that same standard of care.”
The Capitol event underscored PCA’s effort to integrate chiropractic expertise into the state’s broader health framework. As policymakers revisit athlete safety and workforce modernization, PCA continues to advocate for conservative care models that reduce reliance on drugs and surgery while improving performance outcomes.
